While I know some are pleased with today's update announcement, I've noticed a lot of the community is feeling disappointed. I can only speak for myself, but I know for better or worse, my expectations for updates have been influenced by all the datamining that has come from the game. I thought it might be interesting to revisit the first big datamine we got back in April 2020.

I don't want to give people false hope, and it's important to note that just because something is in a datamine doesn't guarantee it will be coming to the game. At the same time, many things on this list have come to fruition, and I do think there is reason to remain optimistic about future updates.

  • Two extra museum upgrades are mentioned
  • All three house levels (after the tent) appear to contain an art section
  • Two new stand-alone buildings are mentioned: the museum shop, and the museum cafe – the latter of which incorporates a Gyroid section
  • Redd appears to have a ship which will dock on the ‘secret beach’ at the north of the island
  • The ‘fake art’ mechanic will make a return
  • The code that pops up a “select an item” box (to gift a villager, to sell, to swap a fish out for, and so on) has a “cTunekichi” (Redd) option – more evidence that he's perhaps coming back
  • Bushes are mentioned: azalea, hibiscus, holly, hydrangea, camellia, osmanthus (although those might change; the list actually changed between version 1.0.0 and 1.1.4)
  • Vegetables which can be grown are mentioned: tomato, wheat, sugar cane, potato, carrot, pumpkin
  • Update 1.0.0 has a file for a “Seafood” Critterpedia page that’s supposed to contain 33 items – the only one actually in the released game is the manila clam
  • There’s a third Nook’s Cranny upgrade referenced
  • Swimming is mentioned; diving will allow you to obtain fish (a different set from fishing) and seaweed – there’s a portion of the save file reserved to store them already
  • There are unused shopping interfaces in the game: ‘cGardening’, ‘cMuseum’ (possibly the aforementioned museum shop), ‘cRealEstate’, ‘cGallery’
  • There’s a function that stores a ‘play report’ (Nintendo’s aggregate stats on gameplay) with three variants: get_recipe_diy, get_recipe_clothing, get_recipe_cooking – only the DIY one is actually ever used, so the other two might be in the plans
  • Some mentions of stuff here have been removed from 1.1 onwards; the list mentioning ‘FlowerBush’ and vegetable names has been modified to list ‘FlBu, V0, V1, V2, …’ instead, one mention of Redd’s shop has gone from ‘TsunekichiShop’ to ‘TShop’ – ‘TShop’ is in what seems to be a list of doors that buildings can have
  • Since 1.1 they’ve added ‘WOffice’ as well, which isn’t actually used yet
  • There’s a list of types for items where every type is used in the game, except for “Art” and “Dishes"

so a ton of what was originally datamined has been added by now - redd, bushes, swimming, one of the mentioned museum upgrades, and one of the vegetable types was added. going by that list, we still have another museum upgrade (i think?), a shop upgrade, and two or three more buildings to be added. that's quite exciting, and the few things left seem to be quite big!

if i'm correct, the original datamine being referenced here was done by twitter user @Ninji - he's further confirmed that despite the fact he no longer does a 'full' datamine with every update, these have either 1) been fulfilled or 2) removed (or more likely hidden) from the code in future updates, which is part of why he no longer datamines as much as he did, and was most certainly done in response to his hugely publicised datamines. the removal/hiding of the code doesn't mean it's not happening - it just means the dev team are working harder to cover up future updates now they know people are actively looking through their code to see what leftovers can be found.

either way, this definitely proves there's a TON of stuff happening behind the scenes, and that certain things (shop upgrades, museum upgrades, and a cafe) are realistically definitely going to be added at some point!

Yeah, the actual source is Ninji on Twitter. And yeah, as the months went on he said they're getting better at hiding things in the code so that he can't spoil. I guess it was a double-edged sword because when he found this stuff I thought it was stuff planned for 2020 after the April update happened, but I guess they're going even slower than that (or scrapping some of the ideas without removing the code).

Also, what does standalone museum café mean???? I just want to know if we're getting more buildings so I don't have empty reserved spaces on my island for the love of Nook

This makes me think about the Mermaid Fence that was found. I have been wondering if each year will have a couple of new diys added to the seasonal/holiday stuff we already have.

oh yeah I remember that... they seemed perfectly functional as well which is just so bizarre. I also think removing the white fences which were in promo ads and the original trailer is weird

Most of those on the list have been added, so this is a very good list.

If I hadn't been hanging around the datamine discord, I'd probably be confused on "seafood". That's the deep sea creatures, if anyone is wondering

removing them for this long, absolutely.

That datamine is literally why I haven’t given up hope yet.

Hopefully everything else is added in soon enough, the long wait sure is aggravating.

Hopefully this means that we’ll get the cafe back without Brewster and with a more interesting character! 😁
I mean, it's possible that they gonna let a family member of Brewster run the cafe now, just like how Daisy Mae replaced Joan. Imagine a hipster pigeon which wants to run a hip cafe and sometimes gets visit by Brewster who's not sure what he should think about it. I at least wouldn't mind to meet some new family members of NPCs, Daisy Mae is already a cutie (although someone should give the poor girl some handkerchiefs).

Yeah, i recall those datamines. One of the most exciting parts for me was the possiblity of getting cooking and more crops. I hope these get implemented!!

it's kind of amusing to look back now on these datamines and remember when we didn't have Redd, or bushes, or diving etc but also it doesn't feel like long ago that it all got announced lol. the fact that a lot of this has come through is definitely a strong source of hope - if we believed it when none of this was in game yet surely we can hold onto it now!

I'm excited about the new veggie plants. I noticed PC has other crops as decor as well. I wonder if they will look similar.
WOffice makes me think of the Happy Home office.. hmm?

There WAS an apparent posted datamine that I came across before the game launched from from someone with an early copy. I've tried to find it over and over again but I can't for the life of me remember where I saw it. I can't give much credence to it, since whoever posted probably wasn't a prominent data-miner like Ninji, but I remember it mentioning a couple of other returning features from NL such as Airport/Resident Center customization themes, The Club, and Reese and Cyrus returning as "vendors" of some sort - which ended up being Wedding Season I guess.

With Ninji's data-mine though, I'm fairly certain most of this stuff, if not all will be added in at some point. Seems like a HUGE chunk of the game to just randomly scrap tbh. All I can say is that there current pacing with releasing new content just feels a tad too slow. If there is some sort of 1 year anniversary update in the works with a load of new features dropping at once, I'm expecting a second Direct or something - similar to what they did with New Leaf's expansion in 2016.

I'm not renewing my NO subscription and seriously considering deleting my island and selling the switch.

Tired of playing 'the waiting game'.
