Very disheartening news and I was just watching Willy Wonka on TV recently. I would always watch the film growing up as well. RIP. :-(

Kinda irritates me that most people only know him for his Willy Wonka film, but my thoughts go to his family at this moment. What a beautiful, funny, and overall great man he was.

Apparently his family left some shuffled music for him to listen to in his bed, and he died during "Somewhere Over the Rainbow".

Poor man.

look at me im so cultured for knowing that he was in more than one film

I don't know why it "irritates" you. This comment is the crap that goes on /r/iamverysmart.

I wonder how the oompa loompas is handling the loss, charlie has the factory so. I'll miss him...

I guarantee that in a week's time, everyone will know every movie he was in. But only now that he's dead will people care enough to watch those movies. That's just the cycle. He was a brilliant man and deserved recognition throughout his career, not just because of one role. Same with a lot of actors who have passed. I'm not trying to say it's people's faults they don't know his other roles, I'm just saying it irritates me that Willy Wonka is the only thing people are talking about, when he did so much more, and so much that was just as amazing.

Just my opinion.

Young Frankenstein is legit one of my favorite movies. Why did he have to peace out? :'(

It's not even the only thing people are talking about though. I see people mentioning Young Frankenstein more.
That aside, people are mentioning those movies because they're his most recognizable and that's how most people heard of him in the first place. So of course people are going to put his name alongside the movies that raked people in. It's not reducing his talent, it's "Hey, this is the guy in these films that you loved".

If you care about him so much you should be glad that people are going to be learning more about him now, as well as people who are going to be newly appreciating him, instead of acting like you're on a high horse because you know more than one or two of his roles.

I grew up watching Gene Wilder's Willy Wonka. I did not know who he was up until a couple of years ago I'm glad I got acquainted with the real face behind Willy Wonka. May he rest in peace.

I never said it was a bad thing that new people were going to discover him for the first time. I mean, if that didn't happen people would just forget all about him! I only said a single sentence. It irritates me that, before his passing, most people only knew him for that role. That includes me, actually. I don't know many of his other roles. So, I'm not on any sort of high horse. I'm ashamed that I didn't get to know his material more. I'm sure plenty of people feel the same way. But this doesn't really have anything to do with that. I'm just upset the man is gone. He was a beautiful human being on his own and I don't think it's appropriate to debate over stuff like this when the world is mourning.

It's about Gene. No point in anyone starting needless arguments over a single sentence.

I don't think it matters how you know him or what you know him for, what matters is that a wonderful actor and a good human being has passed on. There has been so many legends die this year, so sad
