Saying "no" to a villager and friendship level

Does saying "no" to a request, trade or pocket purchase lower your friendship level with a villager?


I decorated Pom Pom's house and it is absolutely adorable. She pings me to trade or make a pocket purchase and I always say no. She seems so sad.

Examples
1. I might be walking towards Re-Tail and carrying a T Rex Torso -- she pings me and wants to purchase it -- I say no because I don't want to mess up her house.

2. Pom Pom is in Re-Tail and she wants to make a purchase and again I say no.

I don't think saying no hurts your friendship especially if they're the one who pinged you. I decorated a few homes and say no all the time to trading or replacing, I still got their pictures.
I know saying yes to a request and not fulfilling it lowers their friendship level. I always test with my megaphone every now and then to make sure I'm still on a high friendship level with my villagers.

I have tried out an experiment where i always Said yes to one caracter and only Said yes if i was motivated for the request on another. The villager i Said no to sometimes was the first to give me her picture.

My theory is that ? no wont improve OR decrease the friendship level of the caracter. However if you dont talk to ? villager at all for some days the friendship level seems to decrease.

This is only my own observations so im not 100% sure im rigth

It doesn't affect your friendship level. However saying Yes and not doing it will decrease it.

Questions like: "Can I buy that shirt?" or "Want to buy this table?", I always answer with no. It has 0 effect on our friendship because they always react in a non-disappointing way.

Ohh, i always wondered this and was always scared about turning certain villagers down incase it lowered it but atleast i know now!
