selling/buying duped items with real money

I see ads on facebook sometimes for stuff like this and it blows my mind that anyone would pay real money for in-game stuff. I guess not everyone knows that you can get it basically for free on TBT, as long as you save up some of the forum currency

I have bought some things with real cash. I quit smoking and used some of that money to buy things. I only have bought small amount things, and never would spend some of the money people charge. The website acbells is what I have used in the past and they have always been fair and a fast trade. Their prices fluctuate with the markets which is pretty cool! I enjoy the game so much and it’s been totally worth it for me to buy some things, but I understand not everyone can do that.

ehh if people want to spend money on duped items, bells, or tickets then that’s their thing. It’s way cheaper on etsy with the treasure islands so i’m not sure why someone would spend too much on it. I also don’t understand peoples aversion to duped items other than it hasn’t been achieved organically through game. Hacked in items i can understand, but if someone duped a star fragment and gave it to me and then told me it was duped i wouldn’t care or be upset.

I can not be bothered to care about how people play or sell items in this game. It’s not my business what people do so if you want to buy 60 duped wedding pipe organs from a rando on ebay go for it!

Yeah the treasure islands are great!

They don’t seem to be badly priced either. I’ve seen screen shots and i’ve seen some with like 2 hours with unlimited trips for like $15 that’s not bad at all! I’ve never done one but i could see why people want to.

The way i see it is there are a large group of players who thrive by doing themed islands myself included in that. So you spend the time and creativity doing it time and time again. After the 2nd reset you’ve played everything twice. the grind in starting game is abysmal for a lot of players who are just trying to have a creative outlet and build their dreamies the perfect island. Not everyone plays for the slow moving process. I think it’s totally understandable that some people would rather take irl money and use it to progress your game. There would be no difference in buying amiibo cards. In New Leaf to get certain furniture items you had to do it with villager amiibos.

I can understand how some people would rather achieve a catalog organically and that’s fun too. I did that in New Leaf and had a blast. People have a hard time i find letting people play differently than themselves.

Okay rant over lol sorry but that’s just something that’s always running around the AC side of my brain lol

It’s wild to me how people can spend irl money on item that are very easily obtainable through forums.
Yeah, but not everyone wants to be on a forum or be that social to make trades. Also if you have money to spend what’s the difference between spending it on game items or spending it on fast food or coffee?

I think its crazy to pay prices like in the OP but to each their own.

If the person paying for it is happy, then I don't see an issue with it.

I dont think its crazy to spend small amounts of money though. If something is a few quid and you really want it, then cool.

Thats crazy but I did have $4 leftover on a giftcard from christmas so I bought 500 NMTs with it lol. Im against it if its super pricy but at the same time if it brings me joy and its the price of 4 arizona iced teas then go ahead

I definitely wouldn't buy it, though I can see the appeal of maybe dropping a small amount of money for some smaller things (like microtransactions in mobile games and stuff) but, the thing is, I wouldn't trust buying anything from a third party seller. It just seems shady to me. Also, I think you're right, I think Nintendo has confirmed it's not allowed (I'm pretty sure they explained that when people were selling Raymonds and Judys and other villagers for a bunch of money). So that's another reason not to risk it. I mean, is it likely you'll get in trouble? Probably not. But it's not worth the risk, IMO.

That being said, what other people do with their money is their business. If they wanna drop $80 on DIYs, it has exactly no effect on me (I'm certainly not gonna get upset because they're "cheating" because that's silly when it's not a competitive game in the slightest). And if it's making an honest person some pocket money, great for them. Obviously, if anyone is scamming anyone, then shame on them. But I'm not really concerned with any of it. I know the market's out there, has been for awhile, and likely will be around for awhile. But I'm pretty much indifferent.

lol at the year old bump tho. Anyway, I wouldn't do it. I don't see the point of spending money to buy a game that you want to spend time on just to spend more money so you don't have to spend time on the game? If I'm gonna buy a game, I'm gonna play it, otherwise I'll just get a refund and play something else. . But that's just me.

it is illegal but i dont really care if other people want to buy in game items with real currency. i dont think nintendo is losing out, and if thats how they value their money whatever. i wouldnt do it though because i am saving money right now also i bought animal crossing to play animal crossing so no need to use money to skip playtime. im not an item hunter, so i just use tbt for the rare item i decide i want.

That's beyond ridiculous, not to mention just plain stupid. I mean, if you really want duped/hacked items, why not just go to a treasure island? At least it's free, and you're not supporting someone trying to making real money on the game...

This thread was bumped by a bot (posts now removed) and it generally has a negative tone, so let's not restart this discussion.

To clarify, The Bell Tree's stance on this issue:
  • You can do what you want in your own game, as long as you aren't selling duped items here on TBT (whether for real currency, forum bells, or in-game currency) or advising others on how to hack their game.
  • It's never okay to be disrespectful to anyone on this forum. Even if you are technically in the right from an ethical or moral standpoint it doesn't excuse being rude to other people.
