I don't want a random moving in while I'm trying to invite a villager via Amiibo. However, if I don't have a plot down won't they refuse to move in even after crafting all 3 items they requested? Or is that wrong?
I actually did this today! What I did was I ended up asking Nate to move in and he told me there was no room since I didn't have a plot laid out. I got it from Nook, laid it out then ran straight back to him. My way could be convoluted. That's a fair assumption. It's just what I did.
I was debating this yesterday when I was trying to move in Apollo, but I got things to work so I'll tell you what I did. If you have already invited the villager to camp twice and you are now about to invite them for the third day, throw the plot down before you invite them for the third time. Then, proceed to talk to them and craft the item for them as usual. After you have crafted the third item for them, talk to them a few more times and they will agree to move in. After they agree to move in, the empty plot will be marked as sold, so you won't have to worry about a rando moving in overnight. c: Hope that helps!

Once you complete their third request they go "hint hint I kinda wanna move here now you should ask me". At that point I got my plot and put it down before asking them c:
Yeah do it on the third day. I went through this with Kabuki, and he said there was no space to move in, until I put the plot down. Then he requested again to move in, then it worked out.
Yes, plot on the third day, you can have it ready and placed for when you ask them one final time, and they move in the next day. Even if you don't have the plot ready on the 3rd day (if you forget), the camper will tell you that there is no room left on the island, or there is a problem at RS. At that point, you just place the plot, speak to the camper again, and they'll contact RS again and realize that there is room after-all, the problem was sorted out at RS, and they can now move in.
And yes, so far the items that they've requested have been simple things with easily accessible materials. A little tip, place your DIY Workbench next to the campsite (or craft an extra one and place it there) so that you don't have to run back and forth to craft their requests.
