I've never watched anime before, just hasn't interested me. However, I'm thinking of starting so any recommendations as to what show I should start with?

What types of anime are you interested in? There are different genres and types of anime. I’m very limited because I haven’t watched as many as most people, but I can try and give you recommendations.

One of my personal favorites is My Hero Academia. It’s very popular and the character writing is amazing.

That's what I'm saying, I literally have no clue. Just looking for a variety I suppose that are good.

Thanks, I'll add it to the list!

it's really hard to dive right into anime without having a basis idea of what you want to watch. anime genres are all filled with their own tropes that can be really annoying or unattractive to people who havent been exposed to much anime before. what i'd recommend is think of some of your favorite movies and shows, find out what genre those go under, and look at some of the more popular titles in anime under that same genre. there's a lot of action anime, sci fi, mystery, horror, etc.

when looking for recommendations, IMO its hard to recommend any one thing without knowing what you like, BUT i will say some of the more popular ones like Naruto, Dragon Ball Z, My Hero Academia and Demon Slayer tend to be crowd pleasers. Older anime is also very good, like Cowboy Bebop, Sailor Moon and Yu Yu Hashuko.

also dont force yourself to like anime if you just simply dont jive with it. i know you said you werent interested and its not worth it to sit through an entire 24 episode season of an anime to maybe hope it gets better. there really is a huge anime market so you're bound to find something you like. i also recommend using My Anime List as you go through your anime journey as its a huge site for reviews and recommendations. you can also keep a catalogue of what you watched and it'll base recommendations around that.

That was a very helpful read, thank you!

You're right, I just wanna try a series to see if I like anime in general first if I'm honest. If I do like it, then go from there.

Thanks for the recommendations! :)

I feel like anime is one of those things you just really have to vibe with. Most people I know either love it or don’t watch it at all. There doesn’t seem to be a big grey area between the two that i’ve seen. I myself, have to be in a certain mood to watch it. There’s also so many different genres of it. Like, I always try match the anime I watch to the kind of other tv/shows I watch. I really like slice of life anime very sweet and light hearted kinda stuff. I think you should try a few different ones to see if it’s something you’re interested in!

Yeah I’m gonna try a few of the shows recommended to me on this thread to see if I like it.

Thanks for the help!

I'll list some that I liked within whatever genre I think they go under most. Some shows have the tropes I find annoying (incest gag in Durarara and Bungo) but it's so minor enough that I love the show regardless.

Mystery/Supernatural
Bungou Stray Dogs
Durarara
Erased

Action
Noragami
Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood

Cute Girls Doing Cute Things
K-On!
Lucky Star

Drama/Romance
Clannad/Clannad After Story
Tamako Love Story (movie)
Kanon 2006

Drama
Madoka Magica
A Silent Voice (movie)
Angel Beats
Anohana

Comedy
Saiki K
Working!
Azumanga Daioh
Panty and Stocking (dub. It's got lewd raunchy humour)
Ghost Stories (dub. It's **** post, the show)
Nichijou

Slice of Life
Non Non Biyori
My Roommate is a Cat

Horror/Psychological Horror
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni
Shiki

Thank you so much! You didn’t have to do that.

I’ll try some of these shows! 😃

Yeah, I agree with everyone else that it helps to know what types of things you like to watch in general because there's usually a corresponding anime genre. But you've gotten a great variety of solid suggestions so far. I'm going to add a few that nobody has mentioned yet.

Action/Drama
- Attack on Titan (lots of blood and gore)

Fantasy/Isekai (another world)
- Rising of the Shield Hero
- That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime
- Record of Lodoss War (an oldie but good)

You could also check out some anime movies if you don't want to commit to a whole series right away. Here are some good ones.

Fantasy/Horror
- Vampire Hunter D

Psychological Thriller
- Perfect Blue

Any Studio Ghibli movie:
- Princess Mononoke
- Pom Poko
- Spirited Away
- Howl's Moving Castle
- Grave of the Fireflies (very tragic)

Thank you so much for the suggestions!

Yeah maybe starting off with a movie is a better idea for me. A good way to see if I like anime in general before comitting to a lengthy series.

One Punch Man was probably the first anime I ever watched. It's an extremely lighthearted show about a guy who trains so hard he goes bald and can knock out a villain with one punch.

:LOL: that sounds quite funny. I might have to give it a watch!

I used to be obsessed with anime as a teenager, especially the works of Rumiko Takahashi and Akira Toriyama. (Yu Yu Hakusho as well) I read manga more, though, as I just liked reading anyway. I’m not as obsessed as I used to be, but I enjoy it every now and then.

I quite like reading too, haven’t read something in a while though. Might have to again soon! 🙂

I feel like Attack On Titan is the kind of anime that people who don't usually watch anime can get into pretty easily! The same way that a lot of people got into Game of Thrones. The plot is quite fascinating. Or maybe FullMetal Alchemist (or its remake FullMetal Alchemist Brotherhood) and Death Note, they're pretty plot-driven. Hope you enjoy what you watch :)

I’ve never watched anime and I’ve heard of Attack on Titan so it must be pretty popular. Might start with that series.

Thank you for the other suggestions too! 🙂

Are you looking for something to get invested in or for something kinda quick? Some of the series mentioned are multi-season on-going shows! The standard length of a season of anime is around 11 or 12 episodes total, with each episode being around 25-30 minutes long. Just in case length is something important to you!

I honestly would recommend getting started with watching a popular dubbed show (like Pokemon), as that's one of the main ways people are exposed to anime in the first place. Pokemon overall is pretty episode-driven so you can usually jump in anywhere and still enjoy the show.
