I think this is a tragedy... This castle was designed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site back in 2000 and it's very representative of Okinawan/Ryukyuan culture. Shurijo has had points of destruction in the past (most notably in 1945 during the Battle of Okinawa in the closing stages of World War II), but this has destroyed the main courtyard structures. This in all honesty depressing to me, even though I've never been to Japan... :(

That is such a shame. I have never been there, but the pictures of it look really beautiful.

As I'm a fan of Japanese culture, this makes me very sad to see! I really like temples and castles, the architecture looks so pure and amazing. It really saddens me to see that it burned down. I hope they'll be able to re-build it.

my friend went there and loved it! i was thinking of going there when i go to japan. i can't believe this happened, that place had so much history to it too. how'd the flames start?

Nooo.. that's so sad :( I just googled it and fdgfdf it looked really beautiful :(

This is a complete and utter tragedy that someplace so beautiful could be devastated so quickly. I’ve heard similar things happening to important buildings in other parts of the world, but hopefully they can rebuild it. :(

It's still unknown how.
