Good grief.
I think this is a tragedy... This castle was designed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site back in 2000 and it's very representative of Okinawan/Ryukyuan culture. Shurijo has had points of destruction in the past (most notably in 1945 during the Battle of Okinawa in the closing stages of World War II), but this has destroyed the main courtyard structures. This in all honesty depressing to me, even though I've never been to Japan...
