A gentle breeze picked up the girl's skirts as she stood among the trees.
With hair to her knees, it was as if the swirling air would carry her away, but it never did. She was surrounded by nature, what she liked best. The tall trees almost blocked out the sky, leaving a peaceful shadow over the forest floor that made the ground mossy and cool. She wriggled her toes and smiled.
She reached over and touched the bark of a sapling with a single finger.
Suddenly everything, the trees, birds, grass, all became silent and still. No birdsong was heard, no rustling of branches, no chattering from small creatures hiding inside logs.
A strong wing whipped her hair up in wild strands that refused to stay down no matter how she grasped at them. She fell, blinded by the sudden flurry of dead leaves that swept around her. They caught in her hair and scratched her face, making blood trail down her cheeks like tears. When she finally managed to stand, the leaves were gone, and all that was left were horrible, dead trees. Their branches grasped at the darkened sky, reaching for something that they would never have that was obscured by the mist that was now drenching everything.
When she looked at her feet, all the grass and moss was dead. She stepped forward once, terrified.
A huge, dark tree rose out of the ground behind her. With a shill scream, she stumbled backwards as another appeared in front of her. They kept coming, until she was completely sealed in, alone with her terror and tears.
