I don't have a switch yet, but if you have multiple consoles and a couple of copies of the game, then you can have one island for each game and console, I would imagine.
I don't think it limits you to one island per account. It's worse. You need multiple consoles which you have, so I reckon you'll be fine.
I think I read some where that it's like one island per account so as not to overload the system? I might have got that wrong though. So I think you need a copy of the game per console to have more than 1 island. But you may be able to use your Nintendo account on different consoles for just the 1 island
There can only be one island in the game per a single console. Even if you use multiple copies of the game on one console, or even if you access the game from different multiple accounts on a single Switch, only one island will be allowed- which essentially means you can only have one active save in the game at a time, irrespective of all other factors.
With no cloud saves, it seems unlikely to me that Nintendo would only allow one island per account. Not sure, but we'll see.
I think you should be able to have a different town on your other Switch. You just can't play them simultaneously. Since there's no cloud support, there won't be a problem of the saves overwriting each other.
The trickier thing will be playing a single town across two Switches.
I agree with this. Since Nintendo has confirmed they will not allow cloud saves, the process of playing the game on both systems is laborious, to say the least. You'll have to transfer your save data to the Lite, and then to the main, each and every time. That is - of course - if you want to play the same save.
As far as playing the same digital copy on both devices, that, I am at a loss to answer.
I'm thinking (and hoping) I can have another profile on original Switch playing one island, and me on my secondary system, Switch Lite with my profile, playing a different island.
That way we can play different islands at the same time with a single digital purchase.

I tried doing that with my digital purchase of Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, and it worked.

When using the primary console, any user on that device can play downloadable content you have purchased. You are also not required to connect online prior to using downloadable content on your primary console.
When using downloadable software on a non-primary console, your game will pause if your Nintendo Account is used to access downloadable software on any other Nintendo Switch console.
While both consoles will have that game downloaded, only one account can play the game at a time. If a second account attempts to log onto a game simultaneously, the primary console will get kicked off.
I'm not sure that's possible, according to this article explaining it and this Nintendo support answer:
I imagine whomever is attempting to do this will still have to send the save data from one system to another if they expect to play the same save.

I believe that is in reference to using the same profile on multiple systems, not when different profiles, under the same account, are playing games.
Ohh I see. So the original Switch is the primary console, and the Switch Lite is the secondary console. You purchase the game on the primary console under your account. Then someone else plays using a different account on the primary console, while you play using your account on the secondary console.
I think that should work, but we'll see what measures they've taken since they've disabled cloud saves.

So, I'm kind of confused now... If I have a physical copy of the game, would I be able to play the same island on different switches?
