I was honest and said I threw in a regular axe. That was two days in a row I did that. First day she said she was glad I was honest and gave it back. Next day she said she'd give me the golden axe and then said she wasn't serious and left with my axe ._.

The guide is lame.... it has very many mistakes (eg. saying that if you deposit 10,000
bells into your bank account you will get the box of tissues. When It Is actually 100,000)
Also it does not go into detail about anything except the items list.

I suggest you read this PDF, it explains all about luck and the golden karma rule which directly effects the chance you have of getting a silver or golden axe.

Also I suggest you watch this YouTube video, it might help you a bit.
