So far I know they are a currency used on the forums, not in game, and TBT/BTB are used interchangeably. But, why are they used, and much more popular, than in game bells? What do they even do? What's the difference between TBT and tickets? I'm so confused...

Tickets are a currency only used for the TBT Fair which is ending very soon (if it hasn't already, I stopped paying attention when I got sick) which can be used to enter raffles or purchase collectibles.

TBT is used to purchase collectibles, "upgrades" like animated avatars, and is generally the catch all currency on the forum for anything. It's higher than in game bells for some reason probably because it's easy to hack/cheat the turnip system for in game bells compared to TBT bells which have to be earned through posting quality posts and not spam.

But, why are they used,
They are used by forumers to buy collectibles in the shop or exchanging with other members for various reasons, such as selling collectibles or exchanging for other currencies.
and much more popular, than in game bells?
That's just how the community rolls, nothing else to it.
What do they even do?
This is a bit vague, but I'll try my best. They work as:
a. A currency, like in game bells
b. A sort of reward systems that rewards you for making quality posts

TBTB is what you get from making posts. Tickets are a seasonal currency of the TBT Fair, and are used to buy exclusive collectibles only available in the Fair. You get them from participating in challenges or contests.

BTB are really useful, it's nice not having to rely on IGB all the time. If you're active you can pretty much get infinite BTB just by posting often.
They're more popular just because it's a lot easier to click a few buttons than it is to have to drop a bunch of bags of bells. :3
