I've played Animal Crossing for more than a decade now, and since I'm Australian, the seasons were always the opposite. I was really excited when I saw that they added an option for the southern hemisphere, but I was wondering about the holidays and other things.

So will Toy Day be in summer at the end of the year, Halloween in spring, and so on, for us then? I doubt they'll change it so we do Toy Day when it's winter in the middle of the year for us... I'm a bit torn on which hemisphere I'll choose then, because in real life, it always felt odd to celebrate christmas in summer, easter in autumn and so on. On the other hand, it'd be neat to have the weather more or less be the same as real life.

What hemisphere will you guys be choosing?

Another Aussie here. :) I’m pretty sure the holidays/events will play out exactly the same. Might even get some different dialogue from the NPC’s being in the Southern Hemisphere like: “Wait, it’s December and no snow?!” Kind of thing.

It would honestly really mess with my head if Toy Day played out between June - August being winter in-game. Would really ruin the experience for me honestly.

hm hasn't it been like that for your entire life tho? i don't really get what would be weird about it

From the US here, and I honestly have no idea yet which one to pick. On the one hand, it seems like it would be cool to have winter in the game when it's hot out, and vice versa. But then I have no idea how the holiday events will work.

Since I'll be playing one island on my original Switch, and another on the Lite I think I'll do one on each.

Come to think of it, maybe that’s why they’re releasing downloadable updates as events. Makes things more manageable and different depending on what hemisphere you’re in??? Just a thought.

Lol I grew up in Texas and our Christmas were always basically in Summer since it's hot year round lol.

It depends I suppose.

Thanks for the replies guys! I think Speeny is correct about the holidays being the same, but maybe they'll add extra dialogue about the weather, or something like that. I agree that Toy Day in June would mess with my head!
And yeah, I've lived with the seasons like this my whole life, but our tv, books, movies, as well as holiday items etc are practically all from America. (Or at least from the northern hemisphere) It's been reinforced that christmas should be cold and snowy! The whole seasons being opposite is odd to me, but maybe not to other Aussies though.
And that's cool that you'll do both Briguy :)
And yeah that might be it, Speeny!

Aussie here and I'll pick northern. A few reasons. This has always been what AC has been so I'm used to it, but more over I like it. Reinforces that I'm in another world which helps with the relaxation. Plus I'm a sucker for a white Christmas.

Wonderwitch is right. While Christmas in summer is the norm here the entire Christmas industry is built around winter. So to experience it the way it is in tv and movies and books is a real treat. I was lucky enough to spend Christmas a few years back in the Austrian Alps and it was amazing.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this! :) I'm debating on which hemisphere to pick for the same reasons as you. As much as I love a white christmas, I think I'll go with southern hemisphere, but I have enough time to fully decide on which one!

Hey, Aussie here! I'm thinking of picking southern hemisphere, but my one question is, can we change between the two or are we stuck with the one we choose from the beginning of the game? When the game comes out, it will almost be time for cherry blossoms to start appearing for northern hemisphere and I absolutely love cherry blossom season in animal crossing and don't want to wait till September if I pick southern hemisphere.

Yeah I hear you. As much as I like autumn, I would prefer having greenery and cherry blossoms for the start of the game. I don’t think we’ll be able to change hemispheres but who knows!

Such as real life, holidays don't wait on the season, weather, or temperature. They are set in the calendar.

No. I guarantee you will not be able too. Moving an entire mass of land to a different hemisphere is beyond ridiculous, and would allow players to exploit the game to catch the different season bugs without time traveling.

canadian here and i?ll be going with the northern hemisphere since i want the seasons in-game to match with my seasons irl aha

When it's March in the US, isn't it March in Australia? I don't imagine catching different bugs or fish would be the reason people jump hemispheres, as the bugs and fish available are dependent on month and time of day, and not on season of the year.

I recall one of the demos mentioned Tarantulas around while there is snow. Maybe bug and fish are tied to month and ignores the actual season?

Anyhow, I was thinking of playing Southern Hemisphere for plot reason due to potential island name. Then again, I've been playing under Nothern Hemisphere seasons since the beginning. I'll have to really think about this since it is unlikely that this can be changed.

I'm in Australia and have a bit of a problem.

If I pick my own hemisphere, it will be autumn, then winter. That's 6 months of bad weather, for me. I tend to start every AC game near winter and winter has always been the cause of me deleting towns, because snow, to me, is very bland and depressing. I literally feel I can't stand playing it in winter. Snow isn't natural to me.

Now, if I choose the northern hemisphere, I'll have 6 months of awesome greenery.

Either way, I can't get rid of the snow, but although it would be nice to play in my own hemisphere, even though the weather is still northern, I feel if I start this game in autumn with winter soon after, I will not have the same enthusiasm I'd have if I started it in the northern hemisphere, as summer rocks.

What do I do? :(

Tis a conundrum.

If I were you I would choose the northern hemisphere. Having that greenery in game is definitely a big plus, especially if it means you won't delete your town.

Yeah. It's better to start the game in the most positive frame of mind, and starting in spring will do that. :)

I live in Brazil and I am probably going to go with the Northern Hemisphere even tho I live on the southern, that's mostly because the holidays would be really weird on other seasons.

Halloween for example, the Halloween theme and furniture matches perfectly with Fall, same goes for Toy Day and Winter, I think the holidays are a big part of AC so I have been really skeptical about choosing the southern hemisphere, and I am already used to how the seasons in the other games work, so changing that would be weird to me.

I originally wanted to pick South Hemisphere because I play video games far more frequently in the summer than I do in the winter. So that way next winter I would have beautiful greenery in ACNH, but cherry blossoms are just a few weeks after game comes out and having living in Minnesota my whole life, I can't picture Christmas without snow.

Really hope there is someone who does a Southern Hemisphere play through for Youtube.
