There are some things adults liked when they were little. But when we’re adults, we would outgrow them. But there are also some childhood memories that we still like. And SpongeBob is one of them for me.

With the exceptions of Help Wanted/Reef Blower, Pizza Delivery, Squeaky Boots, Rock Bottom, Christmas Who, Survival of the Idiots, Procrastination, As Seen on TV, Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy IV, and Chocolate with Nuts, I’ve seen every SpongeBob episode that premiered before the movie before I turned 13. Normally, I would like an episode if Sandy is present, or for some other weird reason (like Squidward appearing in the empty frame for Employee of the Month in SpongeBob’s imagination), but now I like or dislike some episodes for different reasons from the past.

Imagine seeing something a lot as kid, then not seeing them for a while until you’re an adult. That what makes them better.

General:

  • Underwear jokes are funny when you’re a kid, but not as an adult, but wherever SpongeBob made me laugh is still good today.
    • Ripped Pants still holds up to today because it teaches a lesson about repeating the same old jokes over or exaggerating them to where it gets not funny. It is especially relevant now because of our meme culture. Now if there is anything funny about it, it would have to be because of how some characters are disgusted by it.
    • The first time I saw Patrick in his underwear, I laughed. Now, that scene is only funny because of how they turned the scene into a meme (where they replace the Krabby Patty with something else, like an iPhone). “Who wants to insert phrase here at 3 in the morning?”
    • ”I defy you heart man.” It’s funny now because of how destructive Patrick was.
    • ”Oh yeah, we’re definitely outta here.” It’s funny because of how disgusted the customers were.
  • The Nautical Nonsense and Sponge Buddies DVD was the best themed DVD because of the episodes on there. SB-129, Graveyard Shift, and Club SpongeBob all prove this point. But since I purchased SpongeBob episodes by season on iTunes, half of the episodes aren’t as enjoyable as they were back then, mainly because I didn’t care for them as much. I can also say the same for Tales of the Deep.
  • The Rake Hornpipe (the main tune for the Krusty Krab), was one of the tunes I didn’t care about back then. Now I like it a lot.
  • Sea Stories was the very first SpongeBob DVD I ever had. Although I wouldn’t like some of the episodes as much as the others, the fact that the episodes on this DVD were the very first episodes I’ve seen were why I would rank them more highly. This is especially true for No Weenies Allowed and The Algae’s Always Greener for being meme fuel that made my favorite Mario Kart meme and for focusing on Plankton as the main character of the episode, respectively.
  • Since I’ve gotten more political, there are also some episodes I liked more today than before.
    • Pickles was about a customer named Bubble Bass. Because SpongeBob “forgot to add pickles”, he demands a refund. But at the end of the episode, we learned that he lied about SpongeBob forgetting the pickles because he wanted to get free food. This is especially relevant in politics because of how people lie to get what they want.
    • Suds was about SpongeBob getting sick. Patrick lies to SpongeBob about how bad the doctor is, so he tries to operate on him, only treating him worse. When Sandy came, he tries to cover it up. This reflect how some villains would do some evil scheme, then cover it up to avoid trouble, only to not just land in more trouble, but also to be scorned for generations.
    • Hooky can be an episode to teach kids not to do drugs or listen to anybody that does drugs.
    • The Smoking Peanut is much more interesting because by starting the chaos, SpongeBob actually made the situation better, not worse. What’s even more interesting is that as soon as SpongeBob woke up the clam, she does nothing for a short period of time before crying, foreshadowing the actual cause.
    • Can you Spare a Dime sounds a lot like the issue of welfare. Although SpongeBob was nice at the beginning, he grew impatient when Squidward got even lazier. Squidward becomes much like a welfare recipient, because when he stayed there for too long, he didn’t want to get back to work.
  • I used to not like when when anything bad happens to the main characters, but now I realized that the bad things were more deserved because they did something bad.
    • In Party Pooper Pants, SpongeBob basically acts like he owns the party. While I hated that he got arrested at the end, we saw how the party went when he was in charge and when he wasn’t.
    • In Krabby Land, I didn’t like seeing Mr. Krabs lose his money until I learned that he gained all that money from scamming. Even SpongeBob got upset that he scammed the kids.
    • Inverted with The Sponge Who Can Fly, where if SpongeBob had the advantage, he should use it for those in need, not for his selfishness. But what really went wrong was that the Bikini Bottomites took advantage of his pants to make him do favors for them and wouldn’t let him go to Jellyfish Fields.
  • Mr. Krabs was the first to become my favorite character. Then Sandy. Now it’s SpongeBob. However, the Flying Dutchman has the best voice on the show.
  • Some episodes I like more than before because of some quotes. Bubble Buddy, Life of Crime, and Arrgh! are currently what comes up to mind.

The Rest:

All of the other episodes, either I didn’t watch them back then (like As Seen on TV), didn’t care about to begin with (like Bubblestand), or hated from the beginning (like I’m with the Stupid). This is not to include episodes from after the movie, as well as the movie. I cannot go over details of every episode due to the 10,000 character limit, but I do like talking about changes and such.
