There's eight more entries after this, but this is my last entry related to the contests of the winter carnival. We've seen snowmen, snowmobiles, skiing, winter cooking, snowball fights, winter treasure, and sledding. But what's left? An igloo building contest of course. And all of the participants are penguins.
At 5:00 PM on February 12th, the last contest before the Champion Tournament has began! Aurora, Sprinkle, Flo, Gwen, Roald, Cube, Tex, and Hopper were in line as Helen came to the igloo building arena.
"Welcome participants!" said Helen, "you are ready for tonight's contest. In this arena, there is enough snow for you to build one of the nicest wonders of the north pole, which is the igloo. For the next three hours and 30 minutes, all eight of you are going to build igloos. They need to be big enough for at least eight inhabitants, but not too big. And it has to be an igloo. Build anything else, and you're not going to get counted for. In addition, make sure the structure is strong enough. If it collapses, that's a total fail. I will be judging on stability, creativity, and design. The one with the best igloo wins. The winner will get a few awards and rewards, along with a chance to participate in tomorrow's contest. Are you ready? Then start."
The eight contestants went into the arena and started building. Roald brought a jar of pixie dust. Helen approves of him using it as long as he doesn't steal from others. Roald is also a quickster. He can build fast without being hasty.
The others tried building igloos to stick with the rules. Tex made ice bricks rather than snow bricks, but he used snow as cement to hold the ice bricks up for his igloo. Hopper's igloo was more of a squared igloo than a dome. Aurora's igloo is a kitchen igloo, where she not only builds the igloo out of snow, but she has a kitchen on the inside. She even made the kitchen furniture out of snow. Gwen made a beauty igloo, but had a wooden floor rather than a snowy floor. She made a beauty salon in as well. Cube built an igloo with a maze with a food stash in the center.
The other three contestants had impressive building skills. Sprinkle was able to not just make the igloo out of snow, but the furniture too. She had cobblestones as the foundation, but the snow as the bricks. There was a step-up section in the center too. Flo's igloo was a combination of two igloos trying to fuse together. She had ice as the floor. Roald's was the king. He built an igloo so large it can have two stories, but it wasn't big enough to claim even 10% of the area in the arena. He used the pixie dust to make the bricks more durable and impossible to melt. Before building the igloo, he did some test runs with his torch and blocks. The torch can melt snow bricks, but it cannot melt the snow bricks affected by the pixie dust. Also, the snow bricks can collapse if a heavy object is on top, but not the bricks with the pixie dust. As a result, Roald built an igloo that is more like a house than a traditionally small igloo. He used ice to make the carpets of the igloo. He even had a few holes so the smoke can't fill up the igloo completely. When he was finished, he tried to melt his igloo, but the torch kept failing. There wasn't even a weak spot.
By the time Roald was finished with testing and building, there was 30 minutes left as the other contestants were building. Roald had to relax in his igloo until the time was up. Helen came into the arena to see how well each did. Tex was in last place because he used ice instead of snow, which made it cold on the inside. Hopper was next to last because his igloo didn't look like a traditional dome igloo. Of the three penguins that built nice igloos, Sprinkle scored in third place for not just a nice igloo, but nice furniture too. Flo's got second for being more unique for an igloo. And Roald got first place since his igloo was more of a house than a private igloo. She even didn't consider his work as cheating. Roald wasn't trying to win, but he was trying to come up with a nice igloo.
The top three penguins got trophies. Sprinkle was happy to get her bronze igloo trophy and yellow ribbon. Flo got a silver igloo trophy, a red ribbon, and a small igloo model. Roald got a golden igloo trophy, a blue ribbon, a large igloo model, and a chance to participate in the champion tournament.
One hour later, the winter carnival closed for the day, as there are two days left.
