what am i doing wrong because this fish just will not spawn.
i have fish bait coming out of my ears
its right now january 17, 2021 in my game at 8:00pm
ive just tried to get them to spawn on dec 17, 2021 at 5-6am and got nothing
im in the northern hemisphere.
im trying to catch it from the clifftop river with a pond on the end of it *im fishing the pond bit*
do i have the wrong dates or times or whatever?
 
Have you ever caught other clifftop pond exclusive fish from the body of water you're fishing in? Did you ever terraform the body of water that you're fishing in? It's possible that, if you've terraformed it, you might have caused the game to not consider it a clifftop pond anymore. But I think that stringfish is the only clifftop exclusive fish that can appear in January in the northern hemisphere, so you might have to time travel to another month to test if you can get cherry salmon and golden trout and other clifftop pond exclusives in your body of water. I think they all appear in March, so you can keep trying for stringfish then while also testing if your clifftop pond is working correctly.

That said, I've found that clifftop pond fish are extremely rare, other than the cherry salmon. So you may have just been very unlucky so far.

If you still aren't able to catch it, maybe post a screenshot of your clifftop pond, if you've ever terraformed it. There may be something that others can see that will explain why it's not working.
 
i have caught rare fish out of it...all of them until this one, this one is my last fish catch. i havent terraformed the area at all. i was getting golden trout earlier from the same river pond, and 2 pike as well. i am now in march trying to get it. should i put on my fish t-shirt, fish vest...oh! you said i might be unlucky, could that be because of the feng shui in my house? like, if i re-arrange the colors will give me good fortune? because ive literally gone through 200 fish baits on this. seriously, once i catch this we need to have a luaus lol
 
I didn't mean luck as an in-game mechanic, I just meant that you've been unlucky. I remember using multiple hundred bait trying to get my first sturgeon to appear. Some fish are just really rare, and sometimes luck just isn't with you in getting one to appear. (And sometimes one does appear, but you flub the catch...) But stringfish are definitely in the game, and they definitely appear from December to March, from 4PM to 9AM. So if you're fishing in the right kind of pond during the right month and right time of day, one will appear sooner or later.

thanks kiwikenobi! its seems like im doing everything right here...maybe i just havent caught enough of the river fish so this one just isnt showing up until i do that?
 
Fish don't work like that. I'm fairly sure that you've just been unlucky. The stringfish is extremely rare. You can keep trying the way you have been, or you can just go about your business in the game without focusing on the one fish that you want, and it will show up sooner or later when you happen to walk by a clifftop pond and see a big shadow.
 
well...i FINALLY CAUGHT IT! after 291 fish baits, an endless supply of golden trout, cherry salmon, a couple of pike and a char, And i had to terraform a little bit of the upper river *i had put a small waterfall on one of them, i have two upper rivers*
I GOT THAT SUCKER. my only wish is that this 'bathtub' was actually functional, because i would have boiled that fish into oblivion in it.

I can’t find a stringfish either. Would this be considered a clifftop pond. If not how should I fix it. I managed to find one on my main island but that was last year and can’t remember where I found it on that island.

@azurill The way to test is to see if you can catch any clifftop fish at all from that pond. I don't know how the game determines whether it's a clifftop pond or not. Just, you have to fish there and see if you catch anything that's exclusive to the clifftop. Some of them are pretty common, like the cherry salmon, so if you time travel, make sure you're in a month when you can catch them, and see if you get any. If you get one, great, it counts.

If you fish a long time without getting one, it might not count. In which case, maybe someone else here will know what criteria you need to meet for the pond to count for the clifftop fish, and they'll be able to tell you how to fix it.

Here's some information on clifftop fish, maybe it will help, though I don't think it explains how to make a terraformed pond count.

Thank you , I will be trying that. I believe I can catch the Cherry salmon in Sept on a southern island but will have to double check, thanks for the link.
 
i caught mine after a bazillion fish baits not in the rivertop pond, but in the rivertop river. i didnt even use the fishbait to get it but i had spent two days trying and it finally showed up. very aggravating! the whole time that i was throwing fish bait it was in the rivertop pond. figures i found it in the river lol! dont get mad...do you need fishbait? because i have over 100 of them i can happily give to you azurill
 
I may be mixing my terms. Ponds and rivers are, indeed, very different things. All the times I said "clifftop pond" what I meant was "clifftop river." Very sorry for any confusion. ^o^;>
 
good point kiwikenobi. i also meant that...the pond that im talking about is connected to the river so azurill is fishing in the right spot...that fish is just a complete and total pain in the....

It looks like a pond, but since it has a waterfall, it could be a river. Ultimately, all you need to do is catch a single fish from there. If said fish is a river fish, that it a river. If said fish is a pond fish, that is a pond.

Keep in mind, Stringfish will not spawn in ponds, even if the pond is on a cliff. They will only spawn in clifftop rivers.

Thanks for the tips . I did eventually find one there last night.it took a lot of fish bait.
