Actually, Vikings only visited. French and English settled in Newfoundland, which used to be called Vinland by the few Vikings that came here, and the one that named it was John Cabot.

Hm...not sure about Vinland, I always thought it was more south. Because Leif Ericson described what sounds, to me, more like Martha's Vinyard. But, eh, just a guess.
