Good evening (or whatever time it is for you) everyone.
In 2006, I decided I needed a Nintendo DS. At this point I don't even remember what game I wanted it for--probably one of the Mario ones. But the only DS they had at Best Buy was the one with the Animal Crossing: Wild World pack-in. It looked like a pretty stupid game, but I wanted the DS, so I bought it anyway even though it came with the ridiculous game.
From the fact that I'm posting here you can probably tell what comes next--in spite of how useless Animal Crossing sounded, I put it in (I had paid for it after all), and I was immediately charmed. But... more than that... my daughter, in jr. high at the time, tried it out too, and she also loved the game. We truly bonded over Animal Crossing. (There was, yes, a bit of friction over the use of the DS till we got her her own.) Fast forward, she stayed up late to download New Leaf the night it dropped and later (honestly after not that many people were still playing it) I got a 2DS XL and started New Leaf also. And then my daughter (now an adult with an apartment and a job) got a Switch, and when AC:NH came out, she couldn't resist buying the AC branded Switch. And she passed her original Switch on to me, this was May 2020, so the early AC:NH adopters were already deep into their islands. But she would often text me when one of her villagers was crafting a valuable DIY or something like that so I could visit. I kept up with my island for a few months, but then let it lapse, and went over a year without touching it. (I've learned, it's hard for me to run AC (any version) in "maintenance mode." Once I've gotten my house as big as it's going to get, I kind of lose interest.) But one of my favorite parts of AC:WW and AC:NL was The Roost. So when the 2.0 release came out, I decided it was time to nuke my old island from orbit and start fresh. I started just in time for all the December festivities. My current projects are relocating all my villagers' houses to a single row at the back of my island; putting my own house on a third-level cliff "compound;" and putting together a cocktail bar (very much a work in progress) in the basement.
