The Island of Erinacea

Welcome to my humble little island journal! I can’t promise this will be updated frequently, but I’m excited to have a place to share cute photos of my villagers and major projects.

About the Island 🏝​

The word “Erinacea” comes from the scientific name for a plant known as the “Hedgehog Broom”. Why this prickly plant? Well, I have two prickly little pets, and my obsession with hedgehogs runs very deep into the core of my soul. It only made sense for me to name an island full of animal villagers after my favourite animal, even if the only ones I’ll meet run the local tailors shop!

Since I have no experience with previous AC games, I also had no specific island layout preferences when I was selecting my starting map. However, the main factor in my decision was the small island smack-dab in the middle of the... rest of the island. You can see the same island on my terraformed map! It was my dream to build my house on this space once I unlocked bridges. Although I have straightened rivers and built up a space for the museum’s entrance, the island’s overall layout has not changed significantly from day one. My goal was to have a natural-themed island, and part of this was aiming to not terraform too heavily.

About My House ​

I had two main themes I wanted to incorporate into my house once I unlocked full customization capabilities: a Tudor-inspired exterior (dark wood trim, a black tile roof, and a natural wooden door) and a main room with a log cabin feel. It's a little eclectic, but these are both aesthetics I enjoy in real life, and could only dream of acquiring someday.

Updated June 24, 2020 - My yard consists of a stone wall -- to give the impression of an old English country home -- surrounded by blue and purple windflowers. I'm not normally the biggest fan of windflowers, but I made an exception for these due to their striking colours and correspondingly beautiful "cool windflower wreath" for my front door. The yard is simple, containing a table with food and dish ware, and stone oven, and a cedar tree. I also have a snapping turtle living nearby on the river edge; I caught him a few days into my adventures on Erinacea and have kept him around since.

Updated July 1, 2020 - I can never decide what I want to do with my tiny yard permanently, but I may have winner now. Inspired by real yards in my neighborhood, I’ve done away with the table and put in a garden bench and bird bath to create a more relaxed environment. I also added a bonsai table for that extra “green” effect.

The main room of my home is meant to be cozy year round. It's decorated primarily with ironwood furniture, which a fellow user very kindly crafted for me when I was still new to the game! The two main colours being used in decorating are brown and dark blue, with hints of green. Think cottage in the woods with a modern twist, while still retaining some of the elements seen in more traditional homes, like a roaring fireplace and wildlife-inspired wall decorations.

Our first Bug Off! It was so exciting to participate in this event with my friends I even earned enough points for a gold trophy and all the collectibles! Not bad for a beginner.

Happy Canada Day to all my fellow Canadian players Today was a less productive day since I had real world commitments to attend to, but I still managed to get my new stargazing area mostly complete! I like it a lot more than my old, research-station based feel (the station has since moved to in front of my house), and the white windflowers and yellow hyacinths really help solidify the colour palette. More Celeste furniture may eventually make its way up here, but for now the simplicity is nice and relaxing.

It finally stopped raining on Erinacea for the first time in seemingly weeks (so much hybrid clean-up ), so everyone was out enjoying the sunshine. Including this snazzy duo!

On a side note, look at how teeny tiny Molly is. I just want to smoosh her omg

We finally got some shooting stars over Erinacea! Nothing crazy, but enough to replenish my star frag supply for the next little while.

I also finished my little sunroom/den, and it turned out better than I expected. It’s such a calming space, and the café curtain wall ensures that I’ll always have a sunny place to go on rainy days.
