~ Meadow ~

Hi! I'll pretty this up later when it's not almost midnight! Here's where I'll (hopefully) keep track of my New Horizons island progress!
Feel free to post/comment here, I don't mind at all! :)

Resident Representative: Sharon
Current Villagers: Tammy, Billy, Piper, Zell, Tabby, Groucho, Dobie, Kitt, Snooty, Dizzy

I took down the Eastern balloon catching jailbars and began to build the rough outline of the base of the cliffs that will hopefully become the Lonely Mountains. I'm taking some creative liberties with the location of things relative to each other, for a couple of reasons. Firstly, cycling through islands trying to find one to make a perfect recreation of Moominvalley sounded unfun (what to make of the Resident Services area?) and because it isn't named Moominvalley, after all- (the name doesn't even fit!) it's named Meadow. It's really more about Vibes than trying to make an exact mini map of either area.

In other news, I tried my hand at (poorly) recreating the opening theme from the 2019 Moominvalley show! It's fun to talk to villagers and hear the new little tune. :)

While I'm building mountains, I'm pondering the future resident line-up of Meadow. I have a list of 10 picked out, and I'm pretty happy with it!
EXCEPT. I invited Tabby on a whim, and I've really grown to enjoy her on the island. She is not in the list of 10. But should she be? I think the deciding factor that no, I don't need her on Meadow is that I love her interior design (the toilet in front is SO funny to me) and don't want to change it, but it doesn't really fit the theme of my island, either. But it's going to be really hard to say goodbye.

ough i'm excited to read this as it goes on. i really feel you re: tabby, i think i would also have a difficult time saying goodbye... fortunately my own islands don't have strong themes i need to adhere to, but for example, i had to say goodbye to tammi in order to invite a villager in, and it was hard! i hadn't even liked her before (i don't like monkeys much) but she'd been there so long she really grew on me. alas... (also, tabby is just so fun. i love her)

also i would LOVE to know what the "balloon catching jail bars" were for! it feels like it should be self-explanatory but i can't figure it out!

I can NOT get a read on you to tell if you're joking or being serious right now, so I'll answer earnestly. Some furniture, most famously jail bars, are too tall for balloons to float over, so instead they float downwards to reach the end of the object and then continue on across the island. So, if you want to make balloon farming a little easier, you can place a row of jail bars from the top to the bottom of your island, near the beach. Then, when a balloon spawns in, instead of having to run up and down the beach to find it, you can just hang out at the bottom of the jail bars and know they'll make their way down to you.

So, today I wanted to talk about the eventual permanent residents of Meadow. I wanted a good variety of species (no duplicates) and personalities (one of every type plus the 2 extra) and they had to pass a vibe check. I want to be clear, the vibe check does not mean "is one of my favorites" because some of these villagers I'd never actually thought about before! It IS still related to my aesthetic sense, but that's not the sole determining factor.
So I clicked though the 8 personality categories and picked who I thought fit best.

Cranky: Dobie the wolf
There's more decent cranky villagers than I expected, but ultimately it HAS to be this old man wolf, because he looks SO much like the base wolf model in Meadow.

Jock: Antonio the anteater
This was one of the last personalities I picked, actually! He's very much a vibes-based choice, I love the greyscale with the warm off-white face, and the anteater shape with their long snouts give me perfect whimsical Moominvalley creature vibes. I never considered anteaters a favorite before... but the model has really grown on me, helped in part by my temporary resident, Snooty.

Lazy: Dizzy the elephant
I had him on my old island! His big, innocent eyes, sideways mouth, and overall shape (the trunk! cuuuute) really charmed me, and he gives me young Moomintroll vibes. As a bonus, there's an elephant calf as a playable animal in Meadow.

Smug: Curlos the sheep
He gives me BIG 2019 Moominvalley character Stinky vibes. I think it's the eyes. Plus, he's a sheep! I've always wanted a sheep villager.

Normal: Kitt the kangaroo
KITT my beloved! She was also on my old island, very early on. I let her move away and regretted it forever. Once I got her amiibo, she was the first one I invited to the Meadow campsite. The kangaroo model is very charming, esp with the little joeys, and she gives me BIG Moominmamma vibes. She was the first one I had picked out, I think.

Peppy: Piper the bird
SO many peppy villagers I like that do not fit the aesthetic theme of Meadow, or were a species I already used elsewhere, ah... thankfully, there's Piper. I luckily found her island-hopping, and she's grown on me! I was worried because I really didn't like my original peppy villagers on Meadow (one was Sprinkle, I think?) and I know their personalities are essentially identical... but idk.

Sisterly: Deirdre the deer
Okay, let me be honest, I just think she looks cool and fits the vibe.

Snooty: Pecan the squirrel
There was lots of potential in the snooty roster, but when I saw Pecan and her house (and considered the snooty personality) she reminded me of Mrs. Fillyjonk, another Moomins character.

And then... the last 2, the doubled-up personalities...

Normal 2: Kiki the cat
Okay... I'm a fan of cats in general. Kiki's personality does NOT fit this, but her general look kinda reminds me of the Groke?

Smug 2: Lionel the lion
I really wanted to say Leopold, my original island bestie, my partner in green-haired crime, but somehow knowing it would be a "different" Leopold (mine came from a friend's sibling's island with a DAL eyemask he loved wearing always, for example) made it really hard. So, I went for a different Lion who gave me Moominpappa vibes.

If I remember, tomorrow I'll try to share some pics of the mountains I terraformed! I could do it today but this post is already getting out of hand hahah

oh i was being 100% genuine there so thank you KJNSDKJFN. it's so cool that that's even an option...

i'm so excited that you'll have lionel on your island; he was my first ever campsite villager and i didn't like him at first but he REALLY grew on me. i still miss him.

Oh for sure! It's still kind of a slow RNG drag trying to get diys from balloons instead of like, 500 balloons full of clay.. but being able to do something else and just listen for the balloon sound is helpful.

June 3 2024
Caught the first 3 banded dragonflies of the season! First one must, as always, go to Blathers for the museum, but I'm hoping to catch another for at least one model to be made... I had one on my old island and THOUGHT that I stored it with a friend for my new island.... but it is nowhere in my storage. :^(

Piper wanted me to visit her house, and offered to sell me a piece of her furniture. I saw she had displayed an umbrella I gave her... rather than use it... (turns out the one she uses is the same style in a different color! oops) so I asked to buy it back bc like, why is it house decor girl. She was like BUT YOU GAVE THAT TO ME.... ARE YOU SURE? So I backed down and she seemed relieved. I've never tried to buy something from a villager that I gave to them before, and the unique dialogue was funny.

So, onto a few pics of my mountains!

meado11.png

NO idea what I'm gonna put here, but isn't it cute?

Carving rivers is WAY harder than building cliffs D:

meado13.png

I didn't think about it, but the river and mountains leave Tabby stranded* until I move her house or build a bridge or something... oops! Sorry Tabby!

(*Technically you can walk the long way around the mountains and reach all the little rocky outcroppings behind them. I made sure this was possible. But that's way too complicated for the villager pathfinding, I imagine.)

I might come back later in the evening when the wind changes direction and balloon farm for a while, but otherwise it's a quick visit for today.

I've TTed back to the Spring Fishing Tourney because I felt like finally engaging with it. Considering I only have 1 short river and half my beach to look for fish, it may have been a good idea to just keep waiting, but I also low-key wanted to make a little bit of money from the fish I caught to put towards my current loan. And maybe, who knows, finally get the Cast Master achievement without messing up on like, fish 90 :')

So far I've only hit the first trophy (100 points) and it's a bit of a slog because I don't have any fish bait, and I don't have much free beach space to dig for clams to make any. (One of the things I'm looking forward to is moving everyone's house off the beaches and to their permanent spot, and having room to idly walk around and dig clams. It's oddly kind of zen, and I like gifting fish bait to my friends when we play together.) So I get about 4-5 fish or 6-7 points a round.

After I finish fishing (whichever happens first, reaching 300 points or getting bored) I want to see what bamboo DIYS I have and don't have.

So, after a bit of work (and no fish bait, lol) I managed to hit 300 points for the gold fishing trophy. I then investigated my young spring bamboo diys and I think (not certain, but i think) I have them all, so I came back to present day August for the summer shell diys- I was missing only one, I think, the starry-sands flooring.

Still no Cast Master achievement, I beefed it at 82 fish :'P
I have 100,000 bells to go to pay off my current loan, which is a lot better than when I started! Really excited to get that done :)

Yep, we're back in the present day! For now... hahaha.... I'm pretty sure I have all the young spring bamboo diys and I think I got the one summer shell diy I was missing, so now it's on to the tree's bounty series (and the rest of the fall diy series, oof) which I only have 2 of- the little tree Isabelle gives you the recipe for, and the pine bonsai tree.

I'm excited for the mushrooms and maple leaves! :)

MUSHROOM SEASON!!!!!!!!!!!! I've been hoarding them :) Tomorrow I'm gonna just relax and play for a while, so I'll have a more substantial update then.

Oh yeah, I got Tammy's photo and moved her out w/Deirdre's amiibo recently :)
