Something I find aggravating about the series is that each game is on an entirely different platform! You’d have to have a different device for EACH GAME! It’s kind of a scam, and you’d probably have to spend over a thousand dollars just to be able to play the entire series. Sorry about this little rant, but does anyone else agree with me?
That's true for a lot of long-running series though, not just Animal Crossing. But thanks to backwards compatibility, you could play the main five Animal Crossing games on just three systems:
A backwards-compatible Wii can play the GameCube game and City Folk.
A 3DS can play Wild World and New Leaf.
And of course you'd need a Switch to play New Horizons.
Like Jeff said, this is pretty much true for any major game franchise that doesn't churn out games often on one system like Assassins Creed, for example. While it's annoying for people who don't have the needed systems/can't emulate, I wouldn't call it a scam, especially since AC games release so infrequently (heck we waited 8 years for NH)
Not sure if I understand correctly the complaint, but... isn't that sort of obvious? New games are released as new platforms are created, that's how a franchise develops. No game has ever (as far as I know) stayed in the one platform they were originally launched in, or the whole concept of franchises would simply not exist.
Besides, while we old gamers may be appealed to play newer games, I've noticed that the opposite is quite difficult to happen. I mean no offense to anyone, but newer players are always "graphics this" and "graphics that". If they have a device with less than a dozen buttons/controls, they consider it unplayable. And I've been witness to this, I'm not exaggerating.
So yes, profitable game franchises will continue to be launched in the always newer systems.
Although it didn't stay, Mega Man X camped on the NES much longer than they should have. I wasn't old enough to remember the controversy, but I think fans and investors were getting confused.
SNES - Released 1990
Mega Man X1 - Released for NES 1991
Mega Man X2 - Released for NES 1994
Mega Man X3 - Released for NES 1995.
Mega Man X4 - Released for SNES 1997
The SNES was 7 years old by the time Capcom did it. Oh, but wait, the Nintendo 64 released in 1996. Oops. Silly Capcom.
I'm not complaining though as the 3 NES versions of Mega Man X were the best. I don't care for the 4 sequels following.
