Like seriously, I am now highly contemplating buying a 1.0 switch to play with mods.

The community just comes together and starts all these movements over our mutual love for the game. We will be quiet for months and then a huge new trend will begin, and everyone is getting their islands out again.

I think it’s awesome.

Not trying to be a jerk, but can you explain further? I haven't been keeping up with the community because of rl stuff, so I have no idea what's going on now.

I have never played with mods, not because I'm afraid of Nintendo, but because I don't trust myself not to brick my console. If people want to, go for it.

Until I saw threads here, I wasn't aware of the trend, so I can't say that it impacts my play. And I've played daily since launch.

I guess whatever makes people happy is good.

I wasn’t aware modding became a trend. I stopped playing New Horizons before this happened. I wouldn’t do it. I like to play the game with things that are actually in the game, if that makes sense. Although, I’m not opposed to other people modding their games.

I personally enjoy modding - I have modded my new leaf town and play Stardew with mods as well. I probably won’t do it on the switch though- at least not any time soon ^^ I think it’s great when people find new ways to enjoy games which they’d otherwise not play anymore because they got bored.

It’s hard for me to pick a side on this. For the longest time I’ve been not interested in the ability to spawn things in. The risk kinda always scared me. However, when I think about it, i don’t understand why i get so turned off by the idea because i play modded games ALL the time.

Like minecraft or the sims, i couldn’t imagine playing either of those without mods. However, mojang/microsoft and EA have always been cool with people making mods for the games. I even play modded Stardew Valley, i feel like it opens a lot of creative possibilities to games and it’s a huge benefit for me. Not to mention, the usual quality of life changes.

I don’t understand why Nintendo is so hard stop on modding games. It disappoints me that they don’t embrace the community creativity.

I got into the modding scene of the 3ds with New Leaf when that was popular. I loved it, having infinite power, being able to get any item, any amount of money, being able to make my town (within the confines of the game) how I wanted it with editing the map and putting in PWPs where I wanted (I won't tell you how long I spent getting PWPs before modding, let's just say hours with the diving trick). However, the novelty soon wore off. I still had to go through the parameters of the game, still had to get my approval rating when I started a new town, etc. In the end, having modded it spoiled it for me, I no longer had to work for what I wanted, and I couldn't do exactly what I wanted because of the confines of the game and so, I didn't play, and haven't played since New Horizons was announced and I preordered it. I said to myself with New Horizons I wouldn't mod or cheat, I did TT a little at the start, which I regret because I feel I rushed to get terraforming.

Modding is something that's personal to everyone though, and yes you run the risk of Nintendo bringing the ban hammer down on you, but if Nintendo realized that the community is giving the community what it wants, instead of them, and actually did something about it, i.e Nintendo giving the community what it wants, there wouldn't be as much of a need or want to mod.

If you could get what these mods and modders bring you in the game from Nintendo, would you mod? I wouldn't think so, but because Nintendo seems to be done with New Horizons now, they're not bothered. I love the aspect of designing islands, and making them up, I even bought a second switch for it, so if Nintendo realized that there is such a call and want for more, they should do something about it. Maybe it was just the hype of the game and the popularity of it during the pandemic they cared about and what made them the most money, but maybe that's just me being a cynic.

I managed to mod my switch too and I’m having so much fun again.

If a dummy like me can do it, I think it’s pretty simple lol

To be honest, now that it’s confirmed nintendo is done with the game, I see no harm in modding as long as people are 1.careful and follow the procedures correctly, and 2. understand the risks associated with it.

Nintendo isn't the only one. Sony has also famously responded to console hacking with legal action. And while not every console manufacturer takes such a hard line stance against it (with Valve even openly supporting it for the Steam Deck), the major three all highly discourage it. It's really only the PC gaming space and indie console manufacturers that are truly friendly to modding, and even then it's only sometimes.

There are actual, reasonable logistics for a company choosing to not endorse mods. But it's hard to properly empathize with those logistics when the rationales that are usually given are more directly related to enforcing control over the user experience; and not to mention the outright hostility that many big name companies exhibit in response to it.

i’ve never modded a game before, nor do i think i ever will simply because i’m terrified of messing up and breaking my game/console or something haha, but it really is tempting with all the cool stuff people are doing! i’ve seen some of the items, changes etc people have modded into their games, and it all looks incredible!

like @/S.J. said, i prefer to play within the confines of a game as well (even when the confines get abandoned after less than 2 years 😶), but man... tempting lol. and here i thought the new leaf mods/hacks were cool. ya’ll really stepped it up a notch.

man, I said in a different post that I'm personally anti-mod (in any game), but the other day on twitter I came across a post about a mod that gives you pastel colored flowers in ACNH and it just.. blew my mind. They looked so cute!!!

I still probably won't mod ACNH, but seeing the cool mods is entertaining! I wish Nintendo would at least consider taking some of the mods and putting them in the game officially.

I love mods and I think NH would be one of the best games to have modding for. I love seeing people push the limits of what games can have and watching creativity, storytelling, and quality of mods get better as time goes on. I really hope modding continues to be a thing in NH. If the beginning stages of modding are already going this well, imagine how much better it could get after another 5 years.

I think the mods are very pretty and it’s cool to see the things the community can come up with. I personally don’t use them because I prefer using what the game actually has to offer, like what @xara and @S.J. said, but no shame in using them!

I have no problem with mods nor do I have the knowledge or ability to use them myself. And even if I wanted to it's in no way worth buying a whole new switch. I have bills and can't waste money unnecessarily.

I don't mod, but I totally understand if someone else does a little bit. Sunflowers in ac is a dream come true honestly. There is a person I follow on Twitter who is making an camper park and it looks really cute. Edit btw they have villagers living in the campers.

In all honesty I feel like the mods becoming popular with ACNH is "proof" Nintendo really could get away with adding more to this game for a few years even if it was reasonable paid dlc. Also with the chip stuff and inflation, I'm pretty sure in the future people may be less likely to buy another whole game if it isn't much different than what they have. And I'd wonder how the price of consoles in the future would be if Nintendo continues with their games being exclusive.
But yeah I generally avoid modding as a personal preference (plus I don't want to break my game). It is nice seeing people using assets that exist in the game that the player wouldn't have access to otherwise though.

i’d like to mod but i can’t because i fear that nintendo can brick me at any moment, it’s the same reason why i’ve never modded or hacked new leaf. these nh mods are so cool, i wish nintendo was more mod friendly, why are they so against it? like the worst thing could happen is that someone puts something inappropriate in the game but that’s it. sorry if this is a bad comparison but minecraft is very mod friendly and nothing that i know of has tarnished it’s reputation.

(also kind of off topic but can you see mods on dream islands? ik it replaces certain items)
