I really enjoyed playing ac nl and was thinking about going backwards and getting wild world. Is there any difference in gameplay or are they basically the same thing?

Essentially yes. However in WW you aren't Mayor and you don't have the Mainstreet. Only stores you have is Nook and the Able Sisters. If you ever played Animal Crossing: Population Growing (Gamecube) then Wild Word is basically the mobile version of that.

There are a few differences in furniture. Mostly designs that got upgraded/changed minorly in sets.

It will be a big step down from NL if you haven't played any of GC/WW or CF before.

Most of the differences;
Only 1 house for all human characters.
Villagers can only move into set spaces. ~ 10-15 villager plots per town, with a maximum of 8 villagers living in your town.
No re-tail/most of main streets places.
No PWP / mayorhood.
No island
Slightly smaller town with about half of it as permanent dirt, but the grass that is there doesn't wear down.
No xmas/halloween/easter etc. but smaller almost weekly holidays that repeat every couple of months atleast.
Less than half the number of villagers and smaller catalogue. (144 vills, NL has 333, and ~2000 household items, and I think NL has ~4000.)
No items to hang on walls.
No shoes/trousers/skirts.
No swimming.

This doesn't seem to leave much left in game. :p I think it'd be tough to step down to WW after so much stuff was added in NL. But at the same time I spent hours playing WW back in the day, ~ not sure what I spent my time doing anymore but I did. :p
Though you will get the joy of having actual mean-spirited villagers and they will say completely different things to NL. =D

Except Wild World doesn't have that god-awful acre system. Well, technically it still has it but the game doesn't contain things within each acre. It still expects you to fill out a certain amount of flowers and trees per acre for a perfect town though, which is annoying as all get up because there aren't any lines or boundaries or anything. But hey, at least it feels more open.

I think it's a big step down from NL (not that WW is a bad game). NL is such an improvement that playing WW after would, I think, be quite the disappointment. Don't get me wrong I spent a good amount of time playing WW myself, but NL is just better.

I would not recommend getting it, it's not a bad game, but as stated above New Leaf is a big improvement.

I don't think you'd get back into WW.
I mean, I loved it, but after playing it while i owned new leaf, i was only thinking about new leaf.
ww is essentially boring compared to nl.

there's that, and you have to work for Tom Nook and finish before you can leave the town to go t the only other location in the game, some other person's town. Also no PWPs that you control and there is like a gardening contest in the summer and Tortimer is the mayor and NO ISABELLE and NO UCHI VILLAGERS and NO SMUG VILLAGERS and VILLAGERS CAN'T SHAKE TREES.
sorry about excessive capitals, just trying to make it sound all DUN DUN DUUUN

You forgot to mention the AWFUL Wi-Fi limitations for people who don't have WEP connections available...

Yeah, imo AC is one of those series where it gets better with each update, and going backwards to the "classics" doesn't really add any novelty or nostalgia factors, it's just a step down and has much less features.

If you play NL then go back to older versions such as WW, then you can see that you are restricted from doing stuff.
Of course NL is the newest generation of the Animal Crossing series what with you being the mayor and PWPs, but WW only has it's Tom (Crook) Nook and Able Sisters much like CF (except CF had the city) and much like mentioned above
