Today is the 17th Anniversary of Animal Forest!

17 years ago on April 14 2001, Nintendo released Dōbutsu no Mori, the first game in the Animal Crossing series on the Nintendo 64. Better known as Animal Forest to North Americans, it was only released in Japan, and has never received an official English translation.

You're thinking of Animal Forest e+ which was released on June 27, 2003. The original Animal Forest didn't have that feature.
