I want to build an orchard of the 5 standard fruits, but I noticed that the standard planting pattern puts the trees an awful lot close to each other. I tried experimenting by putting the next line of trees down an extra line, creating a horizontal path that's 2 squared in width, but I'm not sure if that's a good solution.

What are your opinions on tree planting patterns?

On one side of my town, I have a small orchard of trees of fruits not native in my town. It used to be separated by one row, but I later chopped them down to rearrange it so that it has two rows distance from the last row of trees.

However, if you are trying to cram more trees into a smaller space, then go with one row.

Hmm, it's not that much about the money but I do prefer the normal fruits over tropical ones. When there's 1 row in between them it's hard to see the fruits at the end, that's why I considered placing 2 rows in between.

i like two rows between them because, like you said, one row makes them awfully close and cramped >.<

I have the first pattern because I don't really harvest any fruit from my orchard, it's just to have a point of interest in my town. I think it looks nice as is, but it really all depends on what you think is best. You can always try doing the second pattern, and if that doesn't turn out well chop down your trees and revert it back!

I'll go with 2 rows, if I don't like I'll cut them down. That's the beauty of fruit trees. ;)

I have a section of mine that is one row between them in a straight line.
the other ones I have sectioned like you do.. and I definitely prefer the two row zig-zag method... for hide and seek and harvesting!

Before I redid my orchard area, I had the rows separated by 2 spaces. I find it easier to see the fruits in the back that way and it's overall more aesthetically pleasing. If you're planting a dedicated orchard as a point of interest, I'd recommend 2 rows of separation.
