Tree Question

I’m new to Animal Crossing (haven’t played since I was a child and it was on the Game Cube), so I have a question that I’ve not been able to find an answer to. There is randomly one tree a day on my island that drops this pinecone-looking thing on a string. When you shake the tree, it drops it down, but then takes it back up the tree a couple seconds later. I don’t know how to pull on it, catch it, cut it, etc. Does this thing even do anything? What is it?

It’s a bagworm. Use your net to catch it.

it's a bug called a bagworm. if u line up correctly, u can catch it with your net.

I've also found that if you shake that same tree again after it goes back up, it's dropped back down for me, giving me another chance to try to catch it. Good luck!
