do you guys ever notice any kind of unspoken rules or etiquette online? either on TBT specifically or other sites that seem to have a certain culture or expected behavior? Or even just stereotypes people have about different parts of the internet (that may or may not be true). I guess an example or way to expand on this is like... things people who are new to a website/forum/etc wouldn't necessarily be aware of but seem like common knowledge for regulars?

Maybe this is not a "cultural" thing but every time I join a new forum I am so confused by acronyms and some of the terminology. Like, when I joined this one i was like
"What the hell does TBT mean???"
"Oh there's also IGB? I am so confused"
"Oh, ok. LF is "looking for" that's not that weird"
"Seriously, what are TBT and why are people constantly asking for them?"

You get the idea. I figured it was some sort of currency but i had no clue what it actually meant (i got it after some google searches lol)
But this happens every time i join a new community. They have all these words and abbreviations that are so strange to people when they have no idea of what the general vibe is like

oh same! "LF" evaded me for awhile and there are still acronyms with villager trading on here that I probably don't get tbh

on here, the only thing i can really think of is hacking/duping - people who’ve been on here for a while know that talking about it/engaging in it is frowned upon but there’s been some new members from new horizons and new leaf who’ve come on here looking for hackers/duping partners without knowing it’s against the rules ;u;

Haha I remember not understanding any of the abbreviations when I first joined, so I just lurked for a while until I understood. I also remember not understanding the normal prices for different things, or the concept of leaving feedback after a trade.

We're active in a lot of petsites and noticed that TBT seems to function similarly, in that there is a lot of unspoken etiquette when it comes to trading and for the most part they're all kind of similar. Though Animal Crossing is different from petsites, so it did take us awhile to figure out what the different rules are for and what different trades are (we were confused on what cataloging was until we did a catalogue trade, oops). Reviews were also something to get used to since we've never really been on a website that uses the same function, but we can definitely see its uses and we're trying to get in the habit of leaving one every time.

The Animal Crossing community also seems to be different from most other video game communities. As someone coming from mostly Pokemon, it's extremely weird to see hacking and glitches being treated as taboo, since with hacking especially they're a popular service offered by Pokemon fans for competitive battling. Even when we were looking into the game itself we never got a sense that glitches were taboo until we started actively participating in the community.

There are also things that I personally take as being good etiquette that most people don't. This includes using like /s for sarcasm and /j for joking, not using fancy fonts/keeping aesthetics accessible, tipping artists, etc. The tipping artists one was especially weird to discover that most people don't do that.

Another one too is stolen art for use of avatars/signatures/etc, that one seems to be wildly different depending on where it is. Some places treat using art without credit or permission as being extremely bad and against the website's rules, other places pretty much everyone uses art that isn't theirs. We personally just try to credit whenever we can if it's not obvious where it came from.

i still find “BTB” (bell tree bells) more clear than “TBT” (the bell tree?) for the bell tree currency haha
here’s my mini dictionary if anyone is too afraid to ask (like i am)
LF: looking for
FT: for trade
OBO: or best offer
BTB: bell tree bells
TBT: can also stand for bell tree bells
NMT: nook mile tickets
IGB: in game bells
that’s just what i know (i think they’re right)
i don’t like the whole feeling of villagers being “collectibles” as i personally see them as characters made to be your friend so i generally try to warm up to all of them, if i can c:
except for bubbles. i am not a fan of her. she’s kind of annoying and her little tune at the beginning of a conversation totally screws up my beautiful tune that’s made after “on melancholy hill” >:u
i’ve been on a couple of forums that are just passive aggressive af and fortunately bell tree is not like that! in fact it’s one of the kindest, most welcoming communities i know of.
a lot of people are just judgemental, and it’s understandable because it’s difficult to know people and their intentions when you communicate via text. but i still do try my best to give people the benefit of the doubt. and i do wish more internet folks would just let others be, enjoying whatever they enjoy and whatnot.

I've been a Bell Tree member for over two years and still didn't know some of these 😅

I think this applies to everywhere but it bothers me when people ask me to leave them a positive feedback after a trade but don’t return the favour. Happened too many times. I’m usually happy to do it without prompting.
Had this person once ask me through PM to leave a positive review. So I said ok, I’d like one too then. But they never did 🤯 I think it’s just common decency lol, especially if THEY’RE ASKING FOR ONE.
