Some of you have been playing this game for almost a decade, and from what I understand the mechanics behind Animal Crossing: New Horizons remain largely unchanged from the previous games. That being said: do any of you long-term players have any advice for new Animal Crossing players? Maybe something that you wish that you knew when you first started playing?
I'm excited to hear what some of you think. It's really wild to think that some of you have maintained villages for over 8 years now.
I have played for 6 years. One tip I have is that storage for items is limited, and it’s likely the same for New Horizons, so unless you don’t mind leaving your island a dump, you can’t hoard items forever. Be sure not to get rid of items that can only be obtained once, though!
Also, save your bells. You’re going to need it for paying off your house debt.
And a specific tip for this game: I suggest saving your Nook Miles for the pocket space upgrade. You’re going to need it.
Most important is that Animal Crossing is what you want it to be, so go wild!
My thing would be don't time travel. I always feel like if you play the game impatiently, it's going to get boring fast. ACNH feels a bit slower especially the beginning but no one should feel rushed to play catch-up. We all play at our own paces, it's okay.
Learn how to save bells would be another. I always keep 10k on hand. Anytime I surpass the amount, it either directly goes to a loan (say your house) or into the bank.
I’ve been playing animal crossing for such a loooong time. This may sound cliche but the most important advice I’d give to any new player is to enjoy the game and take it slow. Don’t feel pressured to build up your island in a day. Talk to your villagers. Get to know each of them. Don’t rush to kick them out and replace them with all the cute ones on your dreamies list. Sometimes, you’ll end up surprised because some popular villagers won’t click with you and you’ll be closer to someone less popular. Also, try your best to pace yourself. I time travelled the hell out of the game before and got my dreamies and landscaped my town and then after that...nothing. I exhausted the game because I won’t let anybody move out anymore so nothing changed anymore and then I got so bored, I started a new town. But if you’re impatient, feel free to play it your way and time travel. I’m just saying it’s not as exciting anymore.
For me, the charm of animal crossing is in the little mundane things. It’s frustrating at times but the randomness of the game is what keeps it interesting and keeps people playing for years. This way, the emotions are real and organic and the experience is unique per player.
