I'm starting to really hate FB more and more because of the idiotic stuff people have to say. I get everyone has different views on things like race, gender, sexuality, politics, whatever. A lot of my friends don't agree with my liberal or feminists views; hell, they make fun of me for valuing the lives of animals as something more than food. But seriously. The dumbest stuff spawns on FB.
Take today. A "friend" of mine made a status talking about how racism against white people is comparable to women's suffrage/women's rights, slavery, and gay rights combined. How? I had liked the original status ("Racism sucks and shouldn't exist.") before she edited it to include her...views? I had to unlike it as it went on to and as her beauty school friends ganged up on a guy who called her out for her....*slight* ignorance. "I get tired of hearing about racism. It like, happens to everyone, ya know? No one cares." Her status started out great about how racism shouldn't exist and then it turned into "#whitegirlproblems," "don'thatemecausei'mwhiteandbeautiful," and "#colorblindandproud." Are you kidding me? And what makes it worse is all these people are backing her up and telling her how proud they are of her standing up and saying what everyone else is thinking. Um, no. Not everyone else is thinking that... The one person who bothered standing up to her (who was also white/white-presenting) was applauded by literally every non-white person on her friends' list. That shows not everyone has to agree with what you're saying. Even the white-half of me was shaking their head and feeling embarrassed.
I get everyone has their own views and opinions and that FB is a vessel to share that with people. But that was seriously some of the most bizarre crap I've ever seen on FB. How do you say you hate racism, wish it didn't exist, and then go on to be racist in your comments? I had no idea that the persecution of whites is comparable to the combined struggle of enslaved people, minorities, women suffragists, and the LGBTQ community. She was so satisfied with herself too, lo. "I make a difference because I don't see people's skin color." You can SEE someone's skin color, dear. Their skin color is very much a part of who they are and pretending that you're "blind" to that, is like, denying a part of that person. You can see a person's skin. But you accept it and not judge them or persecute them because of it. Boom. My boyfriend is half black; I very much see that he's not white. He sees my pasty white butt; it's a joke for us. Being colorblind and ignoring racism isn't progressive. But then again, she also said feminists were dumb for wanting equal rights ("Men are just better than us. I'm woman enough to admit it, lol.") and that she doesn't get why gay marriage is a big deal because "Who wants to get married anyways?" A lot of people want to get married, you idiot. I know you do because you've been pinning wedding dresses on pinterest so shut up.
I don't know. I usually don't care what people have to say on there but that status alone made me feel so irritated and I guess I just wanted to rant somewhere.
Do you have any friends with questionable views that kind of make you cringe? Do you say anything or just kind of hide the status? I just hid all her activity from my view because she's supposed to cut my hair this week and I don't really want to deal with seeing more of what she has to say beforehand.
