Villager Cards optional?

I'm curious about this - I heard that the special characters are the only characters that require a card for use in the game. Is this true? If so, that must mean that I don't have to own cards of all my favorite villagers, right? Does anyone know how this works yet?

Yes, the cards are only required for the Special NPC characters

The regular villagers will randomly appear on Mini Main Street with requests, but if you really want to decorate a villagers house without waiting for them to appear, then you can scan in their amiibo card and they'll appear right away.
But the Special NPC characters will not appear on Mini Main Street with requests, thus the only way to decorate their houses are through the amiibo cards.

Correct. As far as I know... for non special characters, they will appear randomly in the "plaza" or "main street" of the game, with no need for cards. If you want to "call" one of your choosing though and bypass whether they available in the moment, you'll need the villager's card. You also need cards to "invite" them to a house with other characters.

Nope, and also your favourite villagers may not be included in the first series of cards anyway so even if you did buy cards you might not have your favourite villager characters

You should be able to see all your favourite villagers eventually though, either from playing the game for a long period of time and having them appear by chance or by getting their card which may come out later in the year.
