Villager order on map?

What determines what order your villagers are in on the left side of the map screen? It’s sorted by species, but it isn’t alphabetical for villager name or species name at all? Does anyone know

I believe it is by your most oldest to most recent villager.

I’m not sure this entirely true. I’d been wondering the same for a long time, certainly felt like oldest to newest for a while but after a lot of testing I can confirm that sometimes Villagers are further up the list when they move in. I thought it might be encounter order but I just de-confirmed that too... I’m no longer sure what the pattern is. Convinced there is one though.

I don’t think it’s oldest to newest villager.. that doesn’t hold true for mine.

If you TT it will not be oldest to newest.

Darcy might have hit the nail on the head there. It’s likely oldest to newest but determined by move in date. I feel a little daft for not considering that >.<

ohh it does seem to be based on the move in date! i time travel so they do not show up in the order i received them, but rather the calendar date they showed up. thanks everybody for the help!

i also didn’t consider that they’re ordered top to bottom, instead of left to right

Mine's bugged maybe.. it's showing Roald as first, rest of the 9 are in good order... Roald actually came in later too hmmm

It's definitely not in any order for me.

Mine is: Kiki (3), Bianca (1), Ribbot (4), Julian (2), Pippy (5), Diana (8), Sylvana (6), Agnes (9), Julia (10), Dobie (8)

It’s not in order of when they moved to the island for me, my oldest resident hornsby is in the middle of the list, I wonder if it’s by your friendship/interaction with them?

Yeah. Definitely oldest to newest. I know because when I last checked the map, Tiffany was listed last (she was the last to move in at that time).
