Void, trade, hold of the 16 villager cycle?

I keep hearing that to get an old villager back you have to have 16 villagers move out after them to erase them from your game's memory, my question is does that principle change depending on how you lost them/let them go? Like if I give a villager to someone can I get another version of that villager back into my town after the 16 cycle (but that person gets to keep the original version of that villager that moved out)? Or does it have to be the same version of that villager (like if someone holds it for you until you do the cycle)? I looked it up but I'm having trouble finding the answer on google, I just see guides of how to make the 16 char cycle go by faster but that's not my concern right now. @_@

The 16 Villager Cycle applies to all villagers, all scenarios.

If you try to get the exact same villager, the one who originally lived in your town, back, you have to wait for the cycle.
If you try to get the same villager, but from a different town, you have to wait for the cycle.

When you say that though, do you base it off people experiencing that? Like I don't know anyone who's actually done the cycle which is why I had trouble finding the info. Even the person who made the guide to cycle out villagers said she was only close to finishing it. xD
