The former occupant of the egg was named Tortimer. He was passed around and around from bird to bird to care for, until he had enough.
"I'm leaving!" He sniffled, knowing somewhere out there were people like him. Being a tortoise, he had no bags to pack, so he just set out. It was quite awhile before the bickering bird colony noticed his absence, and despite him only being about five yards away at that time, no one bothered to look for him.
Several years and about 8 miles into his journey, he came across a pair of puppies, golden with fluffy ears. He greeted them warily, but they were just children.
"We're lost!" Cried the boy, flinging himself onto the tortoise. Tortimer instantly softened, realizing a chance to take care of these poor things and make up for his lacking childhood.
After comforting them and trying to gather information on where their parents are, he gathered that they had escaped from a pound, and as far as they knew, had no parents. Tortimer instantly decided they would be his traveling companions.
After a few weeks of traveling together, they realized a mutual dream... A place to call their own, a place to be home.
