I wanna give some gifts (clothes) to Stitches, but I’m afraid of terribly mismatching him! Do you guys have any ideas/experience of clothes that work well with him?

I accidentally gave him a blue suit of lights (which was gifted to me by another villager), but it matches him pretty well!
Also, if you want to see how different clothes look on him: you can use Harv's Island to dress your villagers up and see how clothes look before you gift them stuff!

Hot take: all villagers look good in anything.
Other answer: maybe the frugal clothes? They are patchworky but not super colorful like him, so it'd match but not make him look so busy. Of course, those are full outfits, and he would wear those as dresses... So idk.

I have given him Handmade cape, Dreamy sweater, and Kids' smock, and he suits em all in my opinion :- ):
anything made for kids i think would look best on him. but as others have said definitely go to Harv's! I do this with all my villagers before i gift them stuff just to make sure its not gonna look awful.

In New Leaf,I gave Stitches the red ringmaster coat and it looked good on him but it's not available in New Horizons but the red military uniform is similar and it would probably have the same effect.

mom's handknit sweater in (any except the flower ones)
bear tee
bunny tee
frog tee
big star tee

His preferred styles are simple and cute. Looking at the handy dandy clothing gift cheat sheet I have, that seems to cover a lot of colorful and simple clothes that would probably look really good on him.
Examples:
Ok, so I might have a thing for stripes with the last ones! But, mostly I think he would look good in pastels and bright colors. If you want to go more subtle, the simple boa blousons, aprons, sailor's tee, and the striped shirts would probably be best because they are either simple pastel colors or mostly stripes with colors that accent the colors on him.

- Aran knit sweater in white
- boa blouson in pastels
- cardigan shirt combo in pastels
- all of the gingham shirts
- Nook Inc T-shirt in white and green
- pom pom sweater in pastels
- the rainbow striped sweater (all)
