What is special about Neighbor's Birthdays?

So I've had 3 Neighbors in my town who have had birthdays so far. All that has happened, is just a message being displayed on the bulletin board.

Today is Boomer's Birthday, (and I don't know if anyone has asked this already), are you supposed to do anything? :gyroidconfused:

I've talked to them many times and they never bring up that it's their birthday or anything...

I know in WW you could actually give them presents when you were invited for a birthday party.
If i can't give them anything...what's the point of having it announced on the Bulletin board. <_<
