A lot of people seem super hyped for the newest splatoon game, and I am wondering if I would like it or any of the past splatoon games. I am not a huge gamer, and the only video games I really play are animal crossing and pokemon. For AC, I like designing my character and decorating my house/town. For pokemon, I like the role play aspect of the game (storyline) and VGC (competitive play). Some other games I like and have played are Luigis Mansion, Subnautica, and Raft.

TL;DR I want to know if there is a story line, or if its more of a party game like Mario kart. I'd also like to know if there is any kind of base building or character customization.

hello there I am also new to the game, I love it so far, have a look here to see if you will like it https://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/splatoon-2-switch/

Splatoon does infact have a story and TONS of customization! You used to only be able to choose between girl or boy Inkling and Ocotlings (Octolings being blocked by a $20 DLC), but now it seems we're just choosing our voice and eyebrow types. There's headgear, shirts, and shoes. They all come with certain abilities to enhance your gameplay as well. For example, a shirt you own can come with ninja squid as it's main ability (a shirt-exclusive main ability that allows you to be invisible while swimming in ink, also main abilities worth more than sub abilities), and its sub abilities are special charge up (gain points for your special faster), run speed up, and sub power up (both exactly what they sound like).

As for story and lore, it's actually very deep and more lore is added to it as a new game releases. The story is determined by who is the winner of the final Splatfest (in-game events where you choose a team and fight for it). In the first game, Team Marie won the final Splatfest, and you can see her in the corner as the entrance to Hero Mode (singleplayer, aka story mode) in the hub world. In Splatoon 2, Chaos won the final Splatfest, which caused Splatoon 3 to look post-apocalyptic.

It also can be a 'party game' like Mario Kart if you choose, through private lobbies. There's no alternative split-screen option, you just have to get 7 other people on their switch and Splatoon games if you want a full battle. You can obviously choose whatever stage and mode in this lobby (Splatfest mode allows you to choose the ink color from each Splatfest :00).

People also have made minigames using private battle. I've seen hide and seek, guess who, 'Mario Kart', and several others.

thanks so much for your detailed explanation! im glad it has a story mode, seems much more appealing to me now. do you think I could jump into Splatoon 2 without having played the first game, or will I get more out of it if I play the games in order? tysm again!

Personally for me, I feel like you don't have to play them in order at all (I didn't play the first one) to be able to enjoy or make sense of the game!

I have played both games and while you do get a little bonus out of playing the first game you are perfectly fine to just start with the second. Mostly just a few nods here and there to the events of the first. The second improved a lot over the first as well and has much more to offer.

Unlike some games Splatoon 2 can easily be played on its own.

Splatoon is a multiplayer game about inking the most turf. There's also a storyline and DLC. It's pretty easy.

You don't have to play them in order at all (considering Splat1 is practically dead and Splat2 is halfway to death's door). The basic story is easy to understand if you search it up.
