What's the difference between...

Don't quote me on this but I'm pretty sure this is the difference. When I was selling turnips on an island with a high price tons of people were always coming and going. When they left sometimes it would say that they are going home while other times it would say "'villager' quickly left" or something like that. I think the quickly left one was when they clicked -. I assume that the option between them is just if you want to get out of a bad situation quick and not go to the airport.

oh okay, thanks for the info!! but in terms of saving will it save the progress for both host and the players? if you quickly left, does that mean you are not saving?

it still saves it for you! i usually do this during trades or when i dont want to walk to my partners airport

Is there such a thing as "Someone quickly left." though?
Because every time I've seen someone use "-" to leave (and even when I've used it myself) it still brings up the normal message of "Looks like someone's leaving.", which is the same one used for when someone leaves via the airport. Maybe I'm just tired and forgot about it.

If you saw "Someone quietly left." instead, that means that they either:
  • Disconnected (ie. By accident, faulty internet connection on their side, or on purpose)
  • Console went into sleep mode (There's an option for that in the Switch settings menu)
  • Closed/reset their game
  • Console battery ran out or was powered off
Your progress won't be saved at all if that happened during your online multiplayer session and everyone who's still there will have to do everything they did all over again.

The only time I've seen "Someone quietly left" was when I was using the Nook stop and a guest left on their own by pressing the "-"

A message popped up asking me to close the window, but I ignored it and next thing I know it says "Someone quietly left"
It did not save but neither of us lost our progress or what was done on the island

If your guest leaves through the airport, your gate will stay open. If you press "-" to kick them out, your gate will close and they'll be forced to leave. And if they press "-", it's the same as them using the airport. Your gate stays open and the game saves

Had someone left normally before another person left "quietly"? Because I'm pretty sure the game doesn't autosave while you're playing online and I can't recall whether the "Save & continue" option that the host had in New Leaf is even a thing in New Horizons. "Someone quietly left." always means that a person got disconnected from the game (whether on purpose or by accident, as I explained in my earlier post). On the bright side, at least you can figure out who did it once the island loads back up if you've kept track of who was visiting before it happened.

Usually, if you see that message popping up after someone's trying to leave it's because they're rather impatient and disconnected themselves on purpose. It'll rarely be by accident, such as forgetting to turn off the console's auto-sleep mode if you happen to go afk for a long period of time. I don't really see the point in doing that because even they'll lose their progress (if no one left normally prior to that) and it's just an inconvenience to everyone else.

On the first day I went online, I was shopping at someone else's town on here (alongside quite a few other people) and we all had to go back/purchase everything 2-3 times because someone kept disconnecting on purpose.
