Where do the shopkeeps live?

This is something I've always wondered. Like, I understand that some of them might be able to live in their buildings, like Blathers already sleeps in his museum, Katrina has a munch of pillows, and Luna literally has a bed and couch in her 'shop'.
But Nook and Lyle can't very well live in that tiny shop where the closest thing to a bed is the HHA table, and Leif has a tiny shop with nothing but some plants, a table, and a few tools.

I understand that this isn't a huge deal, but I really REALLY want the next game, or at least a game in the future, to give homes to the special characters. Maybe have a friendship level with them and the player as well, like after the shop closes you can talk to them or schedule visits that fit around their work schedule? idk, I just really want to be best friends with Sable and Isabelle ^^;

I always thought they lived in their shops...like in Nook's Cranny, there is an unenterable left wing which could contain a bed, mini-fridge and/or a tv....that's that I think.

Yeah, it's the same with Nookling Junction in New Leaf.
