Even in a school, you'll be getting the free version. the paid version is only for production. Nothing is locked in the free version, and honestly even in game design (You might want to clarify, Game design is programming) you'll want to know everything you can going INTO the degree.

Both can, yes. Though, they require quite a bit of CPU/RAM to function properly, so they may not work well on older computers or laptops.

It never hurts to give it a shot. If nothing else you can learn the interface of maya without chugging too much.

Zr388, Do you also know how to use Blender? I've always wanted to learn 3d modeling, but never got too far with it. I have blender installed.
