Why am I not getting the hedge DIY from Leif?

I've purchased a ton of things from him when he's been on my island. Bush starts, crop starts, and flower seeds. And yet he's not once given me the hedge DIY, and aside from the salmon recipes and golden shovel it is one of the last ones I'm still missing and I'm getting very frustrated by this. Pretty sure I've spent over 50k bells on him when he's visited, not counting trips to Harv's island.

That's the only requirement I keep seeing online. Be the first one to buy something from Leif on his 3 different visits.

One suggests buying lots of bushes from him every time he's on your island. Then talk to him again afterwards to see if he'll give you the DIY.

OR... you use a different resident to buy from Leif.
OR last resort, buy from someone who has a spare.

Just the maximum amount my bells on hand would let me purchase. I was desperate.

You need to have been the first person on the island to make a purchase of any amount from Leif, and once that's been met he will give you the DIY as long as you're on your home island (i.e., he cannot give you the DIY on someone else's island).

There is no bell requirement, item type requirement, etc. aside from being the first to make a purchase on 3 separate days. Additionally, if you've been playing since 2020 and experienced Nature Day, you cannot get a duplicate recipe out of him after receiving the hedge DIY from Tom Nook during that event.

At this point I'm not entirely sure, because those are and have always been the only requirements for Leif to give you the hedge DIY -- it hasn't changed since he gained the ability to give it to players and has been datamined many times over.

You could humor me if you wanted and sort all of your DIYs alphabetically, then look to ensure you haven't already gotten the DIY, otherwise the only other explanation I have is he gave it to you and you accidentally tossed or sold it, so he can't give it to you again.

And fwiw villagers can't buy from Leif (or any vendor for that matter), only human players can.

I don`t think you even need to buy anything from him. I believe I got the diy from him on one of my islands just by talking to him 3 separate times. Maybe I bought a few flower seeds - probably did - but there is no requirement to buy a lot of stuff from him. So strange you haven`t gotten the diy yet.
Also, people make so many weird claims about how to unlock stuff, it`s so weird.

You do need to make a purchase, talking is not sufficient. All of the unlock requirements in this game have been datamined and/or thoroughly tested at this point, the information just has a hard time circulating and often big game companies won't update their websites to reflect the new, correct info (e.g., people still think you need to spend 5000 bells to unlock Mabel's shop when that has never been the case).

If something isn't unlocking or you aren't getting the expected result, most of the time it's just user error and it's a matter of figuring out what that error is. Respectfully ofc to op, it happens to everyone myself included
