Haha, this is maybe the wrong place to ask for advice, but I just want someone's honest opinion because all my friends and family have to say about it is "Do whatever you feel like."

SO I've been at a small family-run print shop for about 5 months now. I won't go into too much detail but in short, I'm never happy about going to work. In fact I often dread going to work. Above all, two things are really bothering me: that my boss never makes the schedule more than a few days in advance, making it impossible to plan all the other things I need to get done in my life, and, related, an overall feeling of lack of respect from him. He's a nice guy, but . . . I'll always be treated like I don't know anything, even if I work there for years.

(even though HE needs MY help all the time with certain computers and programs. . . )

Not to mention that the business is a mess. Super disorganized.

And the customers drive me bonkers. AND I was sort of lead to believe that I would be paid more than I actually am.

So a family friend offered me a job at the large bookstore where she works. I'm sure like any retail position, it will have its ups and downs. I might not turn out to be any better, but it probably won't be any worse, either. In the least, I'll have my schedule at least a week ahead of time, and I can gain some respect and seniority among the employees if I stick with it. At least it will be a change of pace. At least, maybe, I won't want to cry when I have to go to work.

The cons of switching jobs are:
I will feel guilty about leaving the print shop because they need help so badly.
I will feel like an immature flake, not being able to stick with the job I have.
The book store might force me to take more hours than I want.

What would you do?

Okay, I don't even need to finish reading before giving my opinion. If you don't like going there, leave! The guilt will only last so long, you'll get over it. Especially if they hire someone else. And it's not immature if you want to leave, don't put yourself in that situation. It's hard to do something without the will, and you'll have such a better time in the book store.

In my opinion leave. You deserve much better than what you are being given for your hard work.

Switch jobs. But of course interview for the bookstore job and make sure you get it first before putting in your notice at the print shop.

Edit: unless of course you're already garunteed the book store job from the family friend you mentioned

you have all the right in the world to switch jobs if you're unhappy or stressed out, and frankly, it's not worth it. i'd say go for the bookstore job.

(and keep us updated!!)

I've been in similar situations and trust me, you'll want the job that makes you happier and one that respects that you have a life instead of waiting a few days for a schedule. However, make sure you get a job offer from the bookstore before putting in your 2 weeks notice. I wouldn't drop this job if you don't have the bookstore job confirmed in case it doesn't go through.

Either way, look for another job. Good luck!

Alright, if you're dreading going to work wveryday it's really not working out for you, is it? I understand you might feel guilty about leaving them to it, but you cannot and shouldn't have to go to work everyday to a job you hate. It can and will have a negative effect on your health eventually. I know, I was in a similar situation and got myself in a right state about having to turn up for work in the end.
When you get to the point of feeling like you don't want to go in to work, it's time to move on. Yes, your next job may not be a massive improvement, but you say it would be no worse, so there is nothing to lose. Do not worry about looking flaky or anything like that, this isn't about what other people think. It's doing what's best for you and I know there is nothing worse than being so unhappy in your job.

It seems like the bookstore is the better choice. And that's not just my opinion, but everyone else on this thread.

yea. even if u gotta do more hours why not do more hours at a decent place u might enjoy? and trust me youre def not the first person theyve ever had whos quit early. dont let em guilt you outta quitting. LEAVE THEMmmm
