AN EXTRAORDINARY "hyperspace" engine that could make interstellar space travel a reality by flying into other dimensions is being investigated by the United States government.

The hypothetical device, which has been outlined in principle but is based on a controversial theory about the fabric of the universe, could potentially allow a spacecraft to travel to Mars in three hours and journey to a star 11 light years away in just 80 days, according to a report in today's New Scientist magazine.

The theoretical engine works by creating an intense magnetic field that, according to ideas first developed by the late scientist Burkhard Heim in the 1950s, would produce a gravitational field and result in thrust for a spacecraft.

Also, if a large enough magnetic field was created, the craft would slip into a different dimension, where the speed of light is faster, allowing incredible speeds to be reached. Switching off the magnetic field would result in the engine reappearing in our current dimension.

The US air force has expressed an interest in the idea and scientists working for the American Department of Energy - which has a device known as the Z Machine that could generate the kind of magnetic fields required to drive the engine - say they may carry out a test if the theory withstands further scrutiny.

This is from here

The article is larger there but think of what could be done if it does work.
and they say they could have it as soon as 5 years from now! This would change ideas about physics and allow us to explore the depths of the universe. :ph43r:

:p
That is why it is cool!
Either way there may not be lightspeed in it but it would still be a new propulsion system.

That seems amazing. Too amazing. But hey, there were shows like this in the past imaginging vehicles that could go into space and stuff. Maybe in 2011, that'll be the time those shows become real! Nah! ........... ?

Since humans have the idea, then I would say, they're all set to travel the cosmos. But, going light speed this soon? I didn't think we would be able to even test something like that until 2030 myself.

Well actually I read further and I doubt the lightsped will be soon, however the engine is supposed to be very efficient both requiring less fuel and using less.
But either way it would help us get to Mars in a decade.

Still, it sounds too good to be true. I mean, it's just wow.

Also, this seems like the good time to mention this, but the US Space Command is planning on developing a weaponized spaceship. Who knows? Star Wars could be coming to life within the next 50 years.

;)

I really don't think it is fake.
but it is in its early stages so not much is known.
I found a site that had some stuff on it but it is really complicated and so I stoped looking at it lol

hmm... that engine, plus those guys that are planning on making a space station for tourists... i think i may be able to like, have a fishtank on the moon : o

i wonder what swimming would be like on the moon... its like, less gravity, in less gravity...
