First of all, please keep this civil, but I wanted to know what people think about each. Obviously, people have been using forums FAR, FAR longer than people have been using Discord, before people used forums they e-mailed each other, before that they sent mail to each other, and before that they delivered the message using horses, and obviously before that on foot (Probably forgetting a couple stages there, but whatever).

Anyway, what do you think about this ?new age? use of Discord as opposed to forums? A lot of forums are open to it and encourage it, but I would personally like to #BoycottDiscord because of all the problems it causes. Is it fast, easy communication? Yes. Is that communication a good thing as opposed to forums? Not necessarily. A lot of the times Discord will have admins or leaders who do not do their job properly, and end up convicting and banning the wrong people, which only leads to more negative things.

That sort of thing happened to me while finally giving in and using it the past year. People mocked me, talked about me behind my back, said things that I said which I did not say, and one even went so far as to screenshot something I said and kick me from their server the next day while I was SLEEPING, and I tried proving my innocence and apologizing, but the idiot never responded.

So obviously this is just another way people can screenshot stuff, but ALSO DELETE EVIDENCE, and use it for misuse. If you honestly think that digging up dirt on someone or berating them on something like Discord is okay, you need to try the same thing against me IRL and watch out that I don?t punch or kick your lights out (11 year Mixed Martial Artist).

Aside from all of that, I wanted to know what you guys think. If this thread gets locked, whatever, but this is something that cannot go unheard. Please do not name names or anything of that nature in this thread, but what do you think of Discord as opposed to forums? I am going to go campaigning on every forum I ever used now in order to boycott the use of Discord, and I would appreciate it if people helped out. Something that disturbs me more is the fact that this product came out of California, and California already has a bad reputation for several other things I will not mention in the past. That?s why I need everyone on my side on this.

And that?s the thing too. We are all just people anyway. Forums are more personal because EVERYONE can see EVERYONE post and what EVERYONE says, not like on Discord where people can DM each other in private, where companies even do sometimes, and make up the craziest of lies. I?m an objective person, so I prefer everyone to tell the truth and be blunt about it. I hate subjective things, at least most of them, but without that stuff life would be a lot more boring I will admit.

Anyway, my message stands here. Lock or remove the thread if you want, but I will say it doesn?t get any better than the TBT staff. This forum has literally the kindest moderators, admins, and founders I have ever encountered, and I will never take that for granted.

#BoycottDiscord

I?m going to start right now by cancelling my subscription to Nitro.

i mean????? literally most forums aren't using discord to replace the forums, more just to have a chat place (like irc did before it died)

i feel like this post is incredibly exaggerated (an over-reaction??) anyway

yes, you can get dirt on people, but that happens with almost everything.
and if the person doesn't respond from kicking you? then you probably don't even want to be in the server if that happened.

there's always gonna be admins/mods banning people on forums for things they never did, and the same goes for discord.

most of the things that were mentioned here can happen on both forums and discord so

(ps also there's PMing on forums, which is basically the same thing of DMing on discord)

I accept everything you say if it was not the fact that your argument is fundamentally weak against mine. We’re talking about actual people here, not just “bots” or something of that nature. I foresaw this kind of response already, but the only thing I’ll say to it is,

If you do not agree with me, that makes you a liar already. I can prove this too if necessary. People will hide whatever they want whenever they want from others just to try and have an “advantage” over them. There is literally no single thing anyone in life that ever lived could hide from me that could give them an advantage over me. I’m loyal to nothing, and I do not care about excuses.

In summary, people who think they are better than others are laughable to me. No matter your status in life, no matter how many “advantages” you have, you’re still the same as everyone else. You’re still mortal.

(The above comment is just directed at everyone in life in general)

#BoycottDiscord

i didn't bring bots into this but okay

1. yes, i disagree, but that doesn't make my point "weak?"

2. everyone is gonna think they're better than someone else and someone is always going to try to have "advantages" over you.

i don't even understand what this post has to do with A. the theme of the thread and B. my response

I apologize. My comment was not directed at you. It was directed at pretty much everyone that [continues to use] Discord, save the few honest (ratio-wise) souls that continue to speak their minds and use the product for its intended purpose: gaming.

That’s the thing too. Aren’t there like, dozens of services that do the same thing by now? I mean we’re talking about something that could potentially lead to some really negative occurrences in the future. Not just for myself, but for everyone. It’s just too personal a service.

To use a good analogy, what’s the chance this isn’t like the gate system in Cowboy Bebop malfunctioning and being used for common travel, leading to the deterioration of quality of life for everyone? The funny thing too is that the guy who helped make it possible in the end did not want that. He just liked playing Chess.

EDIT: And it’s not even the “best” service for it. Apple, when comparing it to similar apps of its nature, has it at #8 for me. LOL

To be honest if the Discord you are in has mods/admins who abuse their power, that is more of a thing you should talk to the admins about instead of just being angry about it.
Also, I love Discord way over forums. I have met some really great friends over Discord.
I have literally only had one Discord server that had a big bad event. It was just over some petty people who didn't like someone being banned and the mods putting some extra force for a day and those people raided the server. It was like that for a day and the next day everything was normal.
Another thing is that if you have some problem with people, just block them. Don't go into a big crisis mode because someone hurt your feelings. If the whole server is a problem with you, just leave it. You can also contact Discord if you feel like it violates Discord's Terms and Services or its a big enough deal I guess.
I think it is also important to note that Discord is very easy to use on computer and on mobile. It doesn't take much data either.
I am just guessing you have been on some wack servers because every server I have been on has been nice. (Though some had their moments.)

EDIT: Also boycotting Discord really isn't going to do much. They aren't getting money if you aren't using Nitro + this is a very small boycott. It would also be hard to take down the humongous servers as those of r/overwatch iirc.

Every server I’ve ever been on on Discord save one has kicked me, or done something to upset me. I’m not letting go of this.

EDIT: On that note, in almost all of them I left of my own free will, because I saw what the future for each server looked like because of who was in charge and the kind of terrible people they were. And most of the time it was people 18 and up too, which is sad for society because it means those adults are running around causing a mess by living.

Don't you think that you may have been the reason why this happened?
To see if this is the case, contact server admins and mods and ask them their reasons. Contact other people within the server that have been kicked and ask them why they were.
Also, just because some servers upsetted you really isn't the fault of the whole program.
Again, I have been apart of great servers, one of them being this forum's Discord.

Just because you were a part of some great servers, doesn’t mean everyone was. Just ask around and I’m sure you’ll get mixed responses if people are really being honest to you. Also, see what I did there with the italics? Pretty nice, eh.

Never take for granted the opportunities and the things life lets you do. One day, those things could be taken away from you.

^That’s one of many quotes I will choose to remember in life.

well i mean you're being salty over being kicked from servers that probably had their own reasoning to kick you out of the server

Yes, and their reasons were terrible and built on lies. This world is built on truths and lies. Black and white. For me, there is no grey section. You mess up and do something bad, you do the time.

Pretty sure it goes without saying that there’s a lot of analogies to prove this point.

Maybe I really won't be able to see if people had bad servers due to the fact of me not being in them. (Though I would have to say I have been on one particularly obnoxious Discord but that was due to it being a YouTuber's Discord and having a pretty toxic fanbase.)
The only people I have ever seen being kicked out of Discords were:
People who used racial slurs, sexists, raiders, trollers, fetishizers, and overtly edgy people
I don't see how the whole italics thing adds to your point nor does the whole "never take for granted" thing.

Really, this whole thing could of just been summed up as "You were kicked from the server and you feel bad so you want to bring the whole Discord idea to the ground."

You're allowed to be angry at the actions of users on discord and you're allowed to be upset over the way situations were handled, but imo this has nothing to do with the discord app itself and there isn't any just reason people should boycott it.
If you don't like the way people treat you there, don't use it. Log out of your account, uninstall the app, delete it from your browser, simple as that. Plenty of people, such as myself, use it for communication and I don't see the point of taking a stand against it.
I've been in several toxic communities on there as well but that hasn't stopped me from enjoying the app in other ways, such as DMing my friends or using private servers where we can chat.
If you really dislike discord that much, just stick to the forums. Don't let the toxic communities you came across get you down! Move on from it and find better people to socialize with, either on discord or elsewhere, whichever you feel comfortable with.

Yeah, you’re right. So I would encourage you and others to purposefully join toxic Discord servers, and then good servers or ones you’re already in (just stay in them), and see how many more bad ones outweigh the good.

No, this cannot be summed up based around me and my experiences. This thread isn’t about me. Or rather, it’s not just about me. It’s about everyone that ever had a bad experience with this product. You want to talk about me specifically, go somewhere else and do it behind my back. I don’t care.

Okay, but also the "bad experiences" aren't Discord's fault, so why boycott it?

I’m pretty sure I already explained that, because it’s too personal a service. What’s next? SAO but IRL? I’m sure that’s a great idea! Let’s go make money off of it! (Again, I’m not against you guys here, and you shouldn’t be against me).

seriously, if there's a server you have a problem with, leave it, because you really don't need to boycott an entire company?

You’re onto something now. I did leave those servers. In fact, I’m not in any now, I cancelled Nitro, AND I deleted my account.

But what you guys do not see is that I’m not doing this for myself, I’m doing it for every person that was ever hurt by the product.

Don’t get me wrong. Internet was necessary to win WWII, and innovation is great, but it is also important on who is in control of the use of technology and sciences, not just the actual technology or science itself.

If people actually read History today, they would understand and know that the Germans had a machine which was defeated with a code that would lead to the invention of the internet in I want to say the 90’s, or the 80’s. In summary on that point, internet was a result of that code and without the code being made well, we wouldn’t be here right now. Or at least some of us wouldn’t. Lol.

The fact that people do not realize this and continue to act toxic on the internet only fuels my fires more and makes me lash out against them like Hugh in B2/W2 of Pokemon.
