^This guy has a review of every version possible! He is one of the most renowned people in the tamagotchi community, you can search for any version and he has a video showing you all the basics of the version. There are not always big differences, but the character selection and how you get the adult characters changes per version. some may be based on good care others are based on what class you send them to,etc.

My personal favorite is the iD L, but a lot of people really like the P's. The cheapest colored version is between the 4U or M!X, so one of those would be a good place to start!
