If you have Windows 8, there is a way to do it and no erase everything. But, you might have to reinstall apps? I'm not 100% sure, but it's something like that.

A few days? I left mine alone for 2 months and reset it xD
I've got my perfect town now though. Plot resetting is easier than ever, I've got a nice layout and a secret beach, green trainstation and blue town hall, and most importantly my second favourite town fruit! (I wanted peach but cherries are just as good!)
