Yeah I agree, plus reddit users can be very critical sometimes and straightforward about their opinions, disregarding the fact it could hurt someone's feelings. I'm sorry that happened to you 
I'd feel the same way if I was in your shoes. it's a good idea to stay away from places who don't respect your opinion or sexuality. It sucks though really!
Well I wouldn't say reddit has a tight knit community but it's definitely a useful place.
