You explained your thought process very well, if they want to get pissy about it there's not much you can do. Wouldn't worry about it, trying to please everyone is impossible. Especially if they consistently act like petulant children. Unfortunately with militant LGBT+ folk & SJWs you're either with them or against them, making you public enemy #1. They don't seem to realize it doesn't make people sympathize with their views, rather it divides and alienates others even more.
