ok to make a new canvas you can select "File" and go from there. I think if you want to open another canvas WITH another image u can press "Open"
hmm idk if GIMP has a grid option, I didn't investigate enough to notice one. but all I know is that if u ever wanna make a gif out of it just draw the frames in separate layers and when u wanna save it just press this

well I don't use the paintbrush often (Im trying to use it for shadow and lighting but I havent had much practice :0) but I know most of the other stuff. to get basic lens flares and kool light effects!!!, go to the filters window and it should be under shadow and lighting. also the stamp tool will be the best thing ever btw. you can copy images from your browser and paste them into the canvas, but you have to anchor it by right-clicking and going to "Layers" and selecting "Anchor Layer". theres a bunch of other stuff but I can't remember them without looking at the screen ;;
