End of Day 3 Flavour
And with that,
Silver died peacefully in their sleep.
*
An hour earlier…
Gavin and
Silver were sitting on a log by a stream and eating some (non-poisonous) berries while talking and laughing. After
Silver had saved
Gavin from a wolf attack earlier this morning, the two had become allies.
Gavin was telling
Silver about his drawing collection back home when all of a sudden, all of the tributes left in the arena came running towards them and surrounded them. They looked angry.
“Uh…hey guys…”
Gavin said nervously. “Uh, sorry if I picked the last berries, you can have these if you want.”
Without speaking,
Evan put a spear to
Silver’s throat.
“Hey!”
Silver exclaimed. “What are you doing?”
“We’ve figured it out, you’re a career tribute,”
Cal said confidently.
“No way!”
Gavin exclaimed. “You’re wrong!
Silver just saved my life this morning!”
“They were clearly just trying to get on your good side,”
Cleb scoffed. “You can’t just blindly trust them like that.”
“And what’s your proof that I’m a career tribute?”
Silver demanded.
“
Punchy was killed by a crane,”
Dolby stated matter-of-factly. “I remember
Silver said once in training that they used to work in some sort of power plant. Therefore, they must have figured out how to power a crane in this arena.”
“That’s not good reasoning at all!”
Gavin exclaimed. “You guys have got this all wrong!”
“Stop denying the obvious,”
Evan shook his head. While he was momentarily distracted,
Silver slipped free and started to run.
“Go Silver go!”
Gavin exclaimed. Everyone else started chasing after
Silver. Glow, quick on her feet, scrambled up a nearby tree. But it wasn’t just any tree – there was a nest of lethal Tracker Jackers attached to one of the branches.
Glow grabbed the nest and threw it on the ground; it landed right in Silver’s path. A swarm of Tracker Jackers came out and attacked
Silver.
“Ahhhhhhh!” they screamed. Everyone else ran off in different directions to avoid being stung.
Also not wanting to get stung,
Gavin stayed by the river, but as soon as the last Tracker Jacker had flown off, he ran to
Silver’s side.
Silver was lying on the ground in a daze, hallucinating from the Tracker Jacker poison.
“Gavin?”
Silver asked. “Why are you wearing a porcupine on your head?”
Gavin held back tears. “It’s going to be ok, Silver,” he said. “Just…close your eyes and go to sleep, ok? I’m right here, I’ll look out for you.”
“Okay,”
Silver said, shutting their eyes. “I hope you have a merry Christmas.”
And with that,
Silver died peacefully in their sleep.
**
It was earlier said that everyone in the arena had come charging at
Silver, but that isn’t exactly true. One person had been missing from the mob;
Curry.
At the time of
Silver’s death,
Curry had been hunting for meat up on a cliff not too far from the river. There was a cave on the cliff where he had spotted some bear cubs last night, and he thought they would be an easy kill.
But when he got to the cave, something immediately walked out, and it wasn’t a bear cub. It was a grown bear. But it wasn’t just any grown bear; it was the ugliest bear
Curry had ever seen. It was standing on its hind legs, and it had a neck as long as a baby giraffe. Its face was scrunched up like a lemon.
Curry was so appalled that he didn’t think to attack the bear, or even to run away, until the bear started charging at him. At that point, he turned to run, but he was still so distracted by the ugliness of the bear that he ran straight off the cliff and fell to his doom.
Night 3 ends in 22 hours.
