EDIT: RESULTS ARE HERE!! Nothing too shocking but had no idea about the Vietnamese, Thai, Indonesian, Khmer, Myanma part. And the trace ancestry is a big what the heck too-

(And yes, I know my last name is there; I am public about my name on the Internet)

Ooooh I'm so excited! I just did the test yesterday and I'm gonna send in the results hopefully today and see what I get. As far as I know, I am a purebred Chinese so anything other than Chinese in my DNA is going to seriously shock me lol.

Anyone else done this before? Share your results? :3

YAY! I'm so excited for you!!

I got my results back a while ago.
I'm:
~70% African (Liberia, Some Nigeria, some Ethiopia)
~25% British and Irish
~3% Native American
~2% Hispanic

Do you have a general idea on what your results might be?

soooo I work in genetics and have an advanced degree in genetic counseling. 23andMe gives me headaches sometimes lol

the ancestry stuff is perfectly good and fun, but its the health related stuff that gets me. The stuff they report on are all complex diseases meaning theres several other factors outside of genetics that play probably a more important role, some we may not know about. So you take any health related info with a big grain salt. It also reports on "BRCA1/2" however only looks at 3 distinct genetic changes in those 2 genes rather than the entire gene, so it is not a comprehensive test, anyone truly worried about risk of cancer specifically should talk to their Primary care doctor or find a genetic counselor (thats what i am).

Even then, the results end up being variable. I had a friend whose dad did it, had to submit three different samples, and got results back for two that were kinda different.

Even saying all this, its still something I want to do lol, its just if you are truly concerned about something on a result health-related, then talk to a professional before doing anything with that information to your medical management.

Oooh! You're quite a mix! Lol

Honestly, like I said, I am only aware of my Chinese roots. Literally have no idea what else could be in there but I better at least be 100% Asian if there is something else. I'm too proud of my Asian heritage to have anything else non-Asian in there. XD I grew up Asian. I better damn well be Asian!

my mom did it bc shes adopted and we found out we were some jewish! which is interesting. otherwise it was the usual white people stuff.

edit* tbh youll most likely have a percentage of something else in you but it doesnt reflect on the worth of your heritage at all and shouldnt affect your pride! genetics are extremely complex and compiled over centuries and centuries, and they stick for so long. one incident of another racial division a thousand years ago could still be reflected in your genetics. we actually have 2% african in us despite our family history being incredibly white, likely because of well. bad history a long time ago. idk how else to describe it. its all really complex but doesnt invalidate you.

Oh ya I only got the ancestry/traits part of the kit haha. I don't really care too much about the health related part tbh. I just wanna know if I'm more than just Chinese LOL I saw so many Chinese people on YouTube take the test and find out they're not 100% Chinese and I'm like oh god I wonder what I am then. :00

Oooh! Jewish! That's pretty neat! I found that quite a few people have Ashkenazi Jewish blood in them, including Zach from The Try Guys (he has the most percentage of that I've ever seen). That's really cool though. :)

And I know lol it won't make me any less Chinese than I am but it'll be quite interesting if there is something else.

So I just logged back in to check what my exact percentages are... (this is on ancestry btw) And it updated my results from 50% Filipino to 49%.... I'm going to be bothered by that forever.

i’ve never done it but it’s always been something i’ve considered :0

That's what I would have suspected. I have a hard time trusting this kind of stuff, take the results with a grain of salt. haha

In my experience it's pretty accurate. I knew I'd be around the 25% area for Ashkenazi Jewish because my mom is half herself. And for my native american, 23andme said it's from Peru...which is accurate since my Dad is from Peru. It represented everything I knew about myself and my heritage from what my folks told me. 23andMe also matched me with my second cousin and guessed that they were my second cousin lol.

also my dad did it and i was pleased to know that i share 50% of my DNA with him and that he is indeed my father lol (not that i had any reason to doubt but...PROOF)

Not to ruin the excited mood, but...

Don't these DNA services register your DNA and keep it? Isn't that a little unsettling?

Seems like an interesting thing to do and i get why so many people do it!

BUT doing so many genetics ethics classes during my degree has put me off the idea of selling my DNA profile to a private company with absolutely everything to gain from having my most private info for themselves. just doesn't sit right with me :lemon:

23 & Me is confusing because my sister did one and it didn’t match up with our parents’ ancestory dna results. Looking at us, there’s no doubt they are our biological parents. I honestly think that they must test for different traits within ancestry?? Idk!

Honestly this. I would love to do one of these, but I don't particularly want to sell my DNA to a Chinese corporation.

I really am curious though, because I do know a lot about my genealogy on my mom's side. We can trace our line pretty far back and know that we're Irish, Scottish, and French, but there's some question as to whether or not one of our great Grandmothers was part Native American or not. The only way to definitively know one way or the other would be to get a DNA test and, like I said, we're not thrilled about doing that. Maybe someday though idk

This is where I'm at in regards to these sorts of things, to be honest. The paternal side of my family tree seems to be fairly well documented to a point, but I'm curious how far back it might go, and I know some, but significantly less, about the maternal side. I know for certain that there are a number of European countries included in my makeup from both sides, but I'm curious as to what else may be present that we're currently unaware of.

Unfortunately I'll more than likely never find out more than I know now, because I'm not going to give some company my DNA.

I'd like to do this sometime, because I'm supposed to be mostly Scottish, but there are 'doubts' with my dad's parents (lol), so idk how much I actually am and what else I've got in me

yall too paranoid

Better safe than sorry, my friend. This day and age it's best to not put your trust into too many companies and organizations- especially with something as vital as your own DNA.

Everyone's got their hand in somebody's pocket.
