4kids' lingering effect on things

Is anyone else still bearing a bit of grudge? We are still stuck with their heavily altered Pok?mon dub. I've had more free time lately, so I've been watching youtube videos about what they've done. Apparently they are responsible for the old Legend of Zelda rap, along with the rap number more people might remember from there One Piece dub. I thought one of the shows they butchered was one titled Escaflowne, back in the 90's. Many people say they aren't going to list all of the alterations, but I would be very interested in seeing that.

The demise of 4Kids and others like it remind me that yep, money is the driving force and do not forget it. I didn't have high expectations of them (even as a kid).

However, when you (the company/network and execs) become out of touch with your target demographic, have syndication issues, lack of accountability & adaptability to the "times", etc. well that's not "our" fault. /shrug.

I was just discussing something similar with my partner---the Activision Blizzard stuff that's been ongoing. He filled me in on what I didn't read/hear about and ultimately shook our heads at the self-sabotage. People, generally, can be a lot less forgiving theses days with how much information is available, as well as the valid criticism and commentary out there to form their own opinions. Additionally, there's a lot of competition between companies so when one falls behind/fails, there are many more waiting to take their place. There's less room for error unless appropriate actions/reparations are made.

In short, it simply isn't enough to just put out a canned apology and hope for the best lol. Or in FoxKids 4Kids case, don't address it. Just ~*~roll with it~*~ and hope for the best despite the numbers painting the bigger picture. I try not to let the bitterness overtake me and instead support those who know how to conduct business. The censorship of the media they touted is a whole other can of worms ooh boy.

If they want(ed?) to leave behind that kind of legacy, that's on them.

They’re not just making it too child friendly. They’re also removing references to Japanese culture because they don’t think Americans would understand their culture. But most dubbing companies censor every foreign media to make things understandable to Americans. To me, I don’t care if people won’t get it. I would just leave the original content alone.

They are actually still handling the dub for Yu-Gi-Oh as of 2017 with the Dark Side of Dimensions. They also didn't change that much, according to that youtube guy.

I kind of liked the 4Kids dubs.

I've not seen much of the Yu-Gi-Oh dub, but some of the changes they made for that were absolutely amazing. I like the part where those guys in suits burst in through the door and point menacingly at Kiba.

The 4Kids Pokemon I grew up with. I was older than I would like to admit when I found out that those weren't jelly donuts.

But One Piece, the main event, with a rap theme introduced by Brock (and I'll admit, I unironically kinda like the rap...At least the catchy 'yayo' chanting thing). My lord, this dub is just brilliant. With the utterly bizarre voice cast they had going on, I'm just sad they got cancelled before they had a chance to make Franky sound like Arnold Schwarzenegger making bad cyborg puns. I don't think the anime is that great anyway, they've made a fantastic manga a chore to watch, but if they let 4Kids continue doing what they did I would so watch that from start to finish...Especially to see what new crazy contraptions they come up with to replace guns



I mean, what the heck even is that? What was going through the mind of the person who designed that thing? It is just pure genius and only a true visionary could create such majestic artistry.

Nothing wrong with censoring content unless it effects the plot of the show. Jelly donuts aren't that bad compared to censoring Steven Universe in other countries due to LGBT rights.

They have done that on more than a few occasions. I can name three off the top of my head.

That iceberg was originally a whale, and would later be motivation for another character to join the crew. On another occasion one character's death in motivation for joining the crew. Odd editing made her appear after her death would have taken place, and it is stated she is in a dungeon.

Then back to Pok?mon cutting the Safari Zone episode mostly due to containing a gun. Ash catches multiple Tauros. They are featured in at least 2 episodes after that.
